Business Analyst
The role holder will work as part of a professional service delivery team dedicated to the provision of an efficient, effective and quality driven Information Technology service to staff and students within the Corporate, Administrative, Academic Research and Learning and Teaching functions of the University. This role will focus on defining requirements that will help develop and improve the student experience. You will be part of an established team of analysts dedicated to the provision of an efficient, effective, and quality driven Business Analysis service to staff and students within the Corporate, Administrative, Academic Research and Learning and Teaching functions of the University.
You will apply required analysis methodology, tools and standards in an intelligent and effective way to define the needs of the business and understand the desired changes or problems that may need to be addressed. You will prepare, or contribute to the preparation of, business cases that define potential benefits, options for achieving those benefits through the development of new or changed systems or processes, and the identification of any associated business risks. You will provide a highly professional, friendly and customer-focused face to the services offered by the Business Analysis team.
This post is full-time and fixed term until 31 May 2026.
Salary: £40,247 - £45,163 per annum (Grade 6)

Job Description
The job requires the role holder to:
1. Liaise with senior clients and IT staff as required, conducting investigations and subsequently producing requirements specifications and feasibility studies. You will ensure that the views of all parties are considered, verified and validated within the stakeholder community and ensure that appropriate prioritisation is applied to meet business objectives.
2. Assist collaborative teams of customers to investigate and document business functions, processes, information flows and data structures, using various methodical and consistent techniques.
3. Plan, arrange and facilitate meetings and workshops with client/user staff during the investigative stages and throughout subsequent development work, presenting issues and solutions both orally and in writing and applying creativity to devise varied solutions to complex problems.
4. Produce and deliver oral and written communications that convey complex conceptual and technical information to stakeholders with a variety of levels of understanding and backgrounds, monitoring and measuring their effectiveness.
5. Define methods for research and analysis based on identified best practice and standards.
6. Assist with the development of detailed specification and modeling of recommended solutions, applying analysis standards, methods and tools in an intelligent and effective way, and producing a consistently high standard of documentation from both a technical and a descriptive nature.
7. Maintain technical awareness at a level where alternatives can be analysed, modelled and classified according to technical feasibility and non-functional characteristics.
8. Utilise business, technical and University experience and skills to assess and advise on the practicability of alternatives, aligning technical limitations with operational realities.
9. Follow appropriate design standards, working in close collaboration with the Technical Solution Architect and senior management as required, taking account of enterprise and solution architectures.
10. Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders.
11. Work within matrix teams of staff and play a full part in the implementation of solutions for the University.
12. Ensure that all tasks and procedures are carried out effectively and efficiently to agreed levels of service or specific requirements of Service or Operational Level Agreements.
13. Lead or participate in any projects as appropriate, managing the operation of project teams, planning, organising and delegating work, monitoring progress and intervening as required.
14. Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements in respect of equality and diversity, data protection, copyright and licensing, security, financial and other University policies, procedures and codes as appropriate.
15. Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and of other persons who may be affected by your acts or omissions at work in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, EC directives and the University's Safety, Health and Environment Policies and procedures and to cooperate with the University on any legal duties placed on it as the employer.
16. Perform other duties occasionally which are not included above, but which will be consistent with the role; these include some duties associated with a more senior role for developmental purposes or for a more junior role for operational reasons.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
1. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
2. Good organisational skills with the ability to work flexibly to prioritise successfully under pressure.
3. Demonstrable knowledge and experience in problem, error and knowledge management analysis, resolution and delivery techniques.
4. Demonstrable knowledge and experience in Business Analysis and Information Capture techniques to document complex technical solutions in a logical and clear framework that can be readily understood by others.
5. Excellent and proven relationship management skills with experience of managing the requirements of stakeholders at all levels.
6. Demonstrable knowledge and experience of delivering comprehensive requirements specifications for successful Business Change programmes.
7. Ability to produce, interpret, analyse and present both qualitative and quantitative data sets, and give advice and guidance to internal and external customers.
Desirable Criteria
1. Either current holder of (or working towards) the BCS diploma in Business Analysis.
2. Degree level education in technology and/or business management, or qualified by experience.
3. Direct University IT experience and/or other public sector experience but ideally with some non-public service sector exposure.
4. Management qualification in ITIL, or similar.
5. Ability to speak Welsh or willingness to learn.
