Role/Responsibilities/Duties of an Assistant Manager:
To assist the Nursery Manager with all aspects of running the nursery and managing a successful business, including: promoting outstanding quality of care and education; developing staff through inspiration and motivation; and ensuring legal requirements and nursery policies and procedures are adhered to at all times.
In the absence of the Nursery Manager to assume this responsibility in full.
To ensure the effective deployment of staff in order to promote high quality, consistency and continuity of care for all children.
To support the Nursery Manager in ensuring that all children are supported and monitored to reach their full potential. This includes those with SEND, those who are in receipt of additional funding, and those who are vulnerable. This may include tracking their progress and/or sharing information with other relevant professionals when transitioning into and out of nursery and whilst they are attending.
To support the Nursery Manager in providing Induction and Supervision meetings for all staff members, in line with company policy. And ensure that they receive high levels of support in relation to their well-being.
To role-model high-quality teaching and monitor the staff’s teaching skills in order to assist the Nursery Manager with improving these, overtime.
To support Room Heads with the content and delivery of the EYFS curriculum, to ensure that it fully covers all areas of learning, builds on what children can do, and is highly effective in promoting the Characteristics of Effective Learning.
To work in rooms as needed and role-model exceedingly high standards of care and teaching.
To establish highly effective relationships with parents; with a view to actively engaging them in supporting their children’s learning at home, and also being mindful of growing the business through parent-recommendation. To include phone, door, weekly updates, newsletters, Parent Evenings, Show-rounds etc (please note, this list is not exhaustive).
To take on the role of Deputy Designated Safeguarding Officer and, with support from Senior Designated Safeguarding staff, and manage any Safeguarding or child protection issues that arise in the absence of the Nursery Manager, in line with procedures.
To support the Nursery Manager and Admin-Lead in ensuring that all legally required records are in place and properly maintained.
To support the Nursery Manager and Admin-Lead in the effective financial management of the nursery and in achieving high occupancy levels.
Ensure that all Health & Safety policies are complied with and that the environment & resources are safe, clean and hygienic. And ensure that any remedial action is taken as necessary.
Ensure that the nursery building, resources, and equipment are maintained to a high standard.
Support the Nursery Manager and staff during inspections by regulatory bodies and assist in the implementation of any recommendations.
Establish and maintain highly professional relationships with the Local Authority Early Years support staff.
To deliver excellent customer service at all times.
In the absence of the Admin Lead, and in consultation with the Nursery Manager and Admin Lead, to competently undertake all administrative duties as required.
Essential Criteria of an Assistant Manager:
Childcare qualification NVQ level 3 or equivalent.
A minimum of 2 years post qualifying experience in a full day care setting.
Experience of leading and supporting staff to improve practice.
Experience of being a Room Manager in a full day care setting.
Experience of safeguarding and child protection issues.
Paediatric First aid Certificate.
Current first aid at work qualification.
A secure knowledge of child development for children 0-5 years and how children learn
A secure knowledge and understanding of the statutory framework for the EYFS and OFSTED inspection processes.
A secure knowledge of other key legislation related to Early Years provision, e.g. Prevent, Health & Safety, Environmental Health (and EHO inspections) and Data Protection.
Sound knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
Effective leadership and management skills e.g. organisational, time management, delegation, communication, motivational, conflict resolution.
Effective administration skills including IT.
Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate with colleagues at all levels, with customers, other professionals and children.
