Job overview
A clinical post which provides the highest achievable standard of care, following individual patient assessment of needs.
• Work effectively and without direct supervision alongside Registered Nurses/Practitioners within the ward/hospital as required on a daily basis
• Undertake supervision and where appropriate assist with the orientation of staff unfamiliar with the department
Main duties of the job
• Working clinically to ensure the safety and quality of the care given to your designated patients, under the indirect supervision of a registered nurse/practitioner
• Undertaking the following, but not restricted to, clinical tasks competently and efficiently:
1. Cannulation and Venepuncture
2. Catheterisation – male and female
3. Wound Care and basic wound closure
4. Performing ECGs
• Competently taking and interpreting Vital signs on adults
• Able to make appropriate referrals to Adult and Child Safeguarding teams
• Supporting and working with colleagues during the shift
• Liaising with the wider MDT to maintain safety
• Helping to facilitate the development of the service as part of the wider team
• To participate in discussions and projects that will benefit the team, the patients and the ward as a whole
• Working under guidance and in conjunction with the senior nursing team and the Matron
• Following the Trust’s Policies and Protocols to ensure the safety of the department
Brixham Community Hospital has one 20 bedded ward and an outpatient’s department on site. This post also supports providing services to support outpatient services at Paignton Health and Wellbeing Centre.
The Healthcare Support Worker Band 3 plays a key role in supporting our team of Registered Nurses and senior clinical staff in the planning, delivery and evaluation of care. You will play a part in meeting our service users' complex needs and ensuring good outcomes. Our service users may require sub-acute care, rehabilitation and End of Life care. You will be working in a friendly and supportive, multi-disciplinary team who are committed to providing high standards of compassionate, individualised care, as well as supporting outpatient services as required.

• To ensure effective communication between staff members and develop a cohesive, supportive and effective team

Planning and Organisation
• At the direction of Registered/Senior Staff participate and deliver planned care managing your cohort of patients alongside colleagues
• Keep up to date with Organisational developments and be responsive to change
• Work within an environment which can have constant interruptions
Responsibility and Accountability
• Adhere to all infection control guidance and policies
• Act with integrity and professionalism, ensuring that you are demonstrating responsible behaviours at all times, in accordance with our Trust values

• To ensure high standards of care in accordance with agreed policies and procedures
• To work with registered nurses and senior clinical staff to maintain a clean and safe environment for all.
• Provide information to enable the effectiveness of care delivered to be evaluated and accurate records maintained

• Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations
• Report any incidents, accidents or complaints to the person in charge of the ward in accordance with Trusts policies

Knowledge and Experience
* Recent experience as an HCA in a hospital setting
* Confidence in own ability to manage your own workload
* Evaluate care delivered and plan ahead
* Identify a sick or deteriorating patient
* Understand how to undertake and monitor vital signs on children
* Understand principles of safeguarding and to be able to make appropriate referrals
Qualifications and training
* Care Certificate
* Evidence of continued study
Specific skills
* Ability to work under pressure and flexibly
* Be competent in recording and understanding vital signs
* To be competent in performing ECGs
* Have basic wound management skills
* To be able to undertake venepuncture and cannulation
* To be able to perform male/female catheterisation
