The Transplant and Cellular Immunology Laboratory, situated at St James's University Hospital in Leeds, is seeking a talented and enthusiastic Clinical Scientist to join their friendly and hard-working team. The laboratory supports renal, liver, CTA and HSCT transplantation across the West Yorkshire region and employs the latest technology including PCR based methods, Next Generation Sequencing and flow cytometry. Recipient and donor matching and compatibility investigations, in support of regional renal transplant and haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) transplantation programmes are performed, as well as Immunogenetics testing for disease associations and adverse drug reactions.
This is a forward thinking and competitive laboratory with a strong focus on, and involvement with, patient management.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills in a specialised range of techniques, and further training will be encouraged. The Laboratory is accredited by the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) and UKAS.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be responsible for the workstream management of a defined area of laboratory operations and will be expected to be competent across the breadth of assays deployed by the laboratory. The applicant will be expected to be involved in validation, verification, quality and development for a laboratory section and will regularly participate in clinical MDT meetings.
The Transplant Immunology service operates a 24/7 on-call service to support the deceased donor renal transplant programme, and, following the appropriate training, the post holder would be expected to participate in this rota.
Applications are welcome from experienced Clinical Scientists who are already registered with the HCPC, or from pre-registrant trainees who have completed or are about to complete their training. The successful candidate will be someone who is highly motivated, enthusiastic and a good team worker. Previous NHS laboratory experience in Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics is essential. Managerial or supervisory experience is desirable.

Management
1. To contribute to the provision of the Transplant Immunology service to nationally and internationally accepted standards (UKAS/EFI) and within the available resources.
2. To contribute to the development of policies and protocols, ensuring these are implemented within the work area.
3. To contribute to the testing and selection of analytical equipment.
4. To provide clinical and scientific leadership and training of staff in specific areas.
5. To attend and contribute to departmental meetings related to management, service development and policy development.
6. To ensure that clinical incidents and complaints are reported and used to improve practice, in line with Trust policies, procedures and national guidelines.

Scientific
1. To contribute to the development and selection of analytical methods employed and to maintain full awareness of their reactions, limitations and causes of interference or error.
2. To provide leadership and guidance to BMS and ancillary staff on matters of quality assurance related to laboratory analyses and to take appropriate action when errors are identified.
3. To use patterns of abnormalities in laboratory results together with clinical details on a patient and general clinical knowledge and experience to formulate advice on differential diagnoses and the appropriateness of treatment.
4. To maintain an up to date and expert scientific and clinical knowledge and to contribute to the knowledge of colleagues.
5. To critically evaluate analytical methods and equipment prior to introduction and maintain at highest possible standards within the resources available.

Research and Development
1. To conceive, initiate, and undertake Research and Development projects.

3. To participate regularly in departmental clinical case discussions and seminars.

As an advanced practitioner to expect to be telephoned at any time for advice or consultation on all and any topic. This will often have a clinical urgency and require other tasks to be put on hold or delegated to a colleague while the consultation is in progress.
The working day is largely unpredictable having to resolve problems of scientific and clinical nature and telephone enquiries may involve a detailed search of the literature, formulating detailed advice and relaying this back, where it is not possible to give an immediate response. Sometimes these interruptions are interrupted by further telephone calls so can end up dealing with 3 or more tasks at the same time and having to prioritise which to complete first.

Qualifications
* First Degree in relevant biological subject
* OR alternative qualifications AND experience externally assessed as being equivalent
* Masters Degree or PhD in relevant subject
* OR assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise within speciality of H&I
