Locally Appointed Specialist Post (LAS or Trust grade Doctor)

The LAS CT1-3 post will provide support to the Consultant Psychiatrist in an established multi-disciplinary team. The post holder will provide psychiatric and physical healthcare input to patients aged 18-65 with a range of functional and organic disorders. The opportunity for multi-agency working is excellent, the working environment is friendly and most Doctors in Training find that they settle in very quickly. The post holder will do the inpatient work and attend Clinical Review. He/she may also be required to take occasional home visits.
Main duties of the job
1. Assessment, diagnosis and formulation of common and complex secondary care community mental health presentations, both routine and urgent.
2. Patient examination, including mental state examination, extended cognitive examination, and physical examination.
3. Biopsychosocial management of common and complex secondary care community mental health presentations, including further investigations and treatment; basic psychopharmacology and experience using common psychotropic medications; psychological therapies.
4. Risk assessment and management.
5. Keeping full clinical notes and ensuring that medical records information is updated according to local guidelines.
6. Liaison with other teams and making appropriate referrals.
7. Working effectively with other colleagues, team-working, and time management.
8. Drafting reports, summaries and letters.
9. Use of mental health and mental capacity legislation.
10. Teaching e.g. of colleagues and medical students.
11. Audit and quality improvement.
12. Research methodology and critical appraisal.
13. Leadership and Management e.g. through attendance at meetings.
14. To advise on safe practices which promote health gain.
15. To keep patients fully informed of their prescribed medication, its purposes, positive effects and any likely ill effects.
16. To reduce vulnerability and empower patients towards making positive choices.
17. To initiate and maintain regular assessment and management of risk.
18. To facilitate community inclusion and rehabilitation.

Person Specification
Experience
* Minimum 1 year in approved training posts in psychiatry or equivalent.
* Ability to take a leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high quality care and staff morale.
* Excellent written and oral communication.
* Effective use of IT including emails and internet.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and effective communication.
* Reliability and honesty.
* Flexible approach to working practice.
* Ability to work in a multi-professional team.
* Other additional clinical qualifications or relevant higher degree.
* Psychiatry at foundation year level.
* Ability to organise own learning time.
* Must have a good grasp of all aspects of Psychiatry, including theoretical knowledge, history taking psychiatric assessment and management of clients.
* Car owner and able to drive with full driving license (Equality & Diversity Act applies).
* Interest in Research Publication of Research s Audits.
* Previous Audits.
Qualifications
* Recognised basic medical degree.
* Full GMC registration.
* Psychiatry at foundation year level.
