Humberside Police are looking for a highly motivated individual to join them in their Major Crime Team as one of their Disclosure/Exhibits Officers on a temporary basis.
The role will require you to ensure all information relating to SOCU (Scenes of Crime Unit) investigations or other SIO (Senior Investigating Officers) directed investigations are disclosed appropriately as defined in the Codes of Practice for criminal procedures and investigations 1996, following the relevant guidelines and directives.
The successful candidate will be responsible all exhibits relating to SOCU investigations or other SIO directed investigations are correctly stored, handled and recorded so the evidence is available for court proceedings.
Key Responsibilities:
Records on any SIO deemed appropriate system and examines documents or articles relating to the investigation to determine its status or classification with respect to disclosure, e.g. Sensitive, Highly Sensitive, etc.
Provides advice to the Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) in relation to disclosure issues, such as, third party disclosure issues, unused material, lines of enquiry, continuity of evidence, material that undermines the prosecution case and material that assists in the defence case.
Edits all relevant disclosable material prior to disclosure to the defence. Sends and collates all letters sent to persons holding unused material and advises the SIO when there is a need to obtain witness summonses to secure third party material.
Liaises with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) and the SIO, providing advice in relation to used and unused material in the enquiry, including the reason material has been classified as it has been, the relevance of material to issues at trial and likely evidential weight, etc.
Takes an active part in Crown Court trials in the role of Disclosure Officer. Is responsible for taking documentation to the court so that they are readily available for the Prosecution, Defence, Judge and Jury.
Receives all property coming into police possession from any source during an enquiry. Examines and preserves the continuity of all property by updating exhibits register on whatever SIO agreed format and exhibit labels accordingly. This is to by the recording of person details of to whom and from which any item is handed for examination or identification.
Arranges appropriate storage facilities for exhibits, such as safe secure storage, refrigeration, freezing and drying where needed, ensuring that cross contamination of exhibits is prevented.
During SOCU enquiries, is a member of the Forensic Management Team, FMT, giving advice on exhibits during case strategy meetings. Collects information on which exhibits/samples are required for inclusion.
Attends scenes of crimes, as directed by the SIO, to receive any exhibits/evidential material always ensuring security and continuity of evidence.
