About the role:
This role will lead a team of specialists ensuring the delivery of the Council’s technical accounting requirements:
1. The annual Statement of Accounts (Council and Pension Fund)
2. Overall financial governance and controls are effectively maintained
3. Coordinate the Council's budget process (including MTFS and other strategies)
4. Maintain and improve the Council’s financial systems, processes, and implement changes to drive efficiencies through the service
About you:
We are looking for a qualified accountant with a background in the public sector. The ideal candidate must enjoy technical accounting and be motivated by the need to improve and change processes and behaviors across the finance team. They should be able to work on their own initiative, be mindful of deadlines, and ensure the team operates effectively to maintain the Council’s activities. Additionally, the candidate should be confident in engaging with politicians and understand the governance processes and regimes.
What you will do:
1. Lead and manage a high-performing team of specialists to deliver their responsibilities on deadline
2. Coordinate the annual budget process from Management Accounting to Head of Service ownership, and stakeholder engagement
3. Build relationships and work alongside internal and external audit, ensuring recommendations are implemented
4. Engage and drive transformation and improvement activities within the team, challenging existing arrangements of finance delivery
