THE TEAM
At JSM Group, we specialise in delivering substation and cabling projects at both distribution and transmission levels, supporting the UK’s decarbonisation targets. We are looking for a Lead Protection and Control Engineer to provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and drive innovation in protection and control system designs across our projects.
SCOPE OF ROLE
As a Lead Protection and Control Engineer, you will be responsible for leading a team of engineers, ensuring the successful design, development, and implementation of protection and control systems for substations and electrical balance of plant (BoP) applications. You will oversee scheme design, relay logic programming, interoperability of digitised substations, and compliance with DNO and National Grid standards. This role requires occasional travel to JSM offices and client locations, with the potential for overnight stays.
HOW YOU'LL SUCCEED
1. Leading and mentoring a team of engineers to drive technical excellence
2. Acting as the technical authority for protection and control designs, including SLD, PLD, AC/DC schematics, relay logic programmes, and metering
3. Developing and delivering substation control system and communications interface designs
4. Managing project budgets to ensure cost-effective design execution
5. Standardising design solutions and enhancing technical documentation
6. Coordinating with SCADA and on-site engineers to ensure seamless integration
7. Conducting due diligence checks on internal and third-party technical outputs
8. Developing and implementing FAT and SAT procedures
9. Ensuring compliance with CDM regulations, ANSI, and IEC standards
10. Maintaining a technical library and supporting the onboarding of third-party service providers
WHAT IT TAKES
1. Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
2. Chartered Engineer (CEng) status (or working towards it)
3. Extensive experience in substation protection and control system design
4. Proficiency in AutoCAD, ETAP, SES CDEGS (advantageous)
5. Experience with substation 3D design (beneficial)
6. Strong leadership and communication skills
7. Excellent problem-solving abilities and a commitment to innovation
