Job Purpose
The Deputy Managing Editor is a key position in the BBC Wales newsroom. Reporting directly to the Managing Editor, you’ll play a leading role in the news management team and will be expected to contribute to shaping and delivering the wider strategic aims of the department.
You’ll focus specifically on training and development, workforce planning and co-ordinating and leading the BBC’s apprentice programme within news, as well as taking responsibility for key newsroom projects.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
The Deputy Managing Editor oversees all training plans to ensure the newsroom is fully equipped to meet the challenge of changing audience consumption habits and a rapidly evolving media landscape.
You’ll be expected to play a leading role in recruitment, staff movement and workforce planning, building considerations around diversity and inclusion into all our activities. You’ll need to provide advice, guidance and support to your management colleagues to ensure we remain aligned to our overall objectives.
The Deputy Managing Editor will act as a champion for our Apprentices, ensuring not only that the programme is run effectively and efficiently but also leading and inspiring them both during and after the scheme itself. You’ll also be responsible for the department’s work experience programme and relationship with external organisations.
You’ll need to be ready to effectively lead critical projects on behalf of the newsroom, for example, co-ordinating our planning for the elections to the Senedd next year and you’ll be expected to clearly understand the way the newsroom operates and the range of journalistic roles within it.
Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience
You’ll be someone with a positive attitude and a solutions-focused, pragmatic mindset - a team player who can contribute to making the newsroom a great place to work.
You’ll have to be highly-organised and have both editorial and project management experience, ideally from a journalism background.
You’ll be great at leading and motivating teams and will need to be able to communicate with a range of stakeholders, adapting your communication style where necessary. You’ll need a good understanding of recruitment and diversity policies.
About the BBC
The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours.
Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual's unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.
We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.
We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.
