We work to keep river users safe, protect and enhance the environment and promote the use of the river for trade and travel. The Chief Harbour Master’s department is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Port Marine Safety Code, ensuring the safety of navigation for all mariners in the Port of London, enforcing the rules and regulations and leading on Port Security and Emergency and Resilience Planning for the PLA. The Harbour Master team are responsible for Richmond Lock & Weir, the Harbour Service and Pilot Cutter crew and operations and marine incident investigations. The Role & Key Responsibilities: We are looking to fill the position of Marine River Inspector on the PLA’s Upper District Harbour Service Launch, based in Richmond. You will be at the forefront of the PLA’s mission to deliver the safety of navigation. You will be in command of a Harbour Service Launch primarily patrolling the river, engaging with stakeholders and ensuring that the PLA’s regulations are complied with. No two days will be the same – one day you could be closing the river to allow an international rowing event to take place, the next you could be responding to an incident alongside the emergency services. You will work with the harbour master team ashore to ensure that we meet our targets to improve safety, protect the marine environment and engage with the public. What we are looking for: A self-motivated, driven individual who can deliver a service without supervision. Someone capable of gaining a thorough knowledge of PLA regulations and a deep understanding of the local area and its key stakeholders. Someone to be calm in a crisis and be able to de-escalate confrontational situations. A MCA Boatmaster’s Licence or a higher STCW qualification is essential. A Thames Local Knowledge Endorsement (LKE) is desirable. Experience in a public facing and/or regulatory role is also desirable, although full training will be provided to the successful candidate. The successful applicant will be employed on a 7 days on, 7 days off shift pattern. Each day shift will consist of 10 hours. There is an obligation to cover other operational requirements outside of this shift pattern. The operational base for this position is Richmond Lock.
