Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a thriving, dynamic intensive care department in a role designed to develop skills in Critical Care Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS). The Critical Care POCUS Fellowship is a fixed term 12 month post for doctors who have experience in intensive care medicine and have an interest in critical care ultrasound. This post is available to start from 06/08/2025 until 04/08/2026
The post would be suitable for a single-CCT ICM trainee in Stage 2 training as part of a Special Skills Year subject to prospective approval from local TPD or as a post-CCT fellowship. The post is also appropriate dual or joint ICM trainees as part of OOPE/OOPT and from equivalently experienced Trust or SAS doctors.
Please note: All Applicants MUST hold a GMC registration with a Licence to Practice in the UK. We anticipate this to be a popular vacancy and this advert may close earlier than the advertised end date, therefore early applications are encouraged.
Main duties of the job
The Fellow will participate in clinical duties on the Stoke Mandeville Hospital and Wycombe Hospital Intensive Care Units. This will generally include participation in the full shift middle tier out-of-hours rota for Stoke Mandeville ICU. Participation in the out-of-hours rota will be designed to maintain the weekly ultrasound session unless exceptional circumstances intervene.
The Fellowship includes one half-day session per week of dedicated time for POCUS, and support to achieve formal POCUS accreditation. The POCUS training will be supervised by a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia with advanced ultrasound practice and extensive experience in mentorship.
Daytime clinical duties will be flexible around departmental requirements in addition to individual preferences if additional skills need to be maintained for revalidation e.g. anaesthetic sessions in theatre will be accommodated if required. This fellowship can support FUSIC (Focused Ultrasound in Intensive Care) accreditation in any modules of the applicant's choosing or FAMUS (Focused Acute Medicine Ultrasound) accreditation if preferred. On completion of the relevant accreditation, the applicant will have the opportunity to develop more advanced ultrasound skills including CNS, GI and VEXUS (venous excess ultrasound). There will also be opportunities to develop existing ultrasound teaching and governance while in post.
