Caring for children and young people who live in residential homes takes a special kind of person.
Raising any child is not easy; it takes a lot of work and dedication. Children and young people in residential care need all this plus resilience and empathy due to the challenges they have faced in their lives.
Our adults who work with the children we care for have special personalities and skill sets; these include but are not limited to:
Behavioural Management Skills
Behavioural management is one of the most important skills for working with children in residential settings. Working with children can be one of the most stressful but rewarding tasks. Our adults are patient, empathetic, and good communicators, enabling them to support our children in times of crisis.
Communication Skills
Unfortunately, there is no uniform approach to talking to a child. Our adults establish effective communication with our children by using respect and understanding during all interactions (even the briefest ones). Role modeling appropriate and effective communication and actively listening to the young people in our care ensures that their views, wishes, and feelings are at the heart of our homes.
Patience
All children need structure and guidance, but this is particularly so for children who have had disruption and trauma in their lives. Often the children we care for have been in multiple placements before coming to us and distrust adults. Our adults understand this and are patient with the children and young people, building relationships at the young person's own pace and offering a non-judgmental environment for them to grow up in and thrive.
