Main duties of the job
We are an acute dialysis unit based in New Cross Hospital.
1. Opening the renal unit and lining and priming dialysis machines for patients.
2. Ordering consumables for the unit weekly.
3. Participating in on-call provision on a rotational basis.
4. Caring for out-patients attending for their routine dialysis and for acutely unwell in-patients requiring emergency treatment.
5. Assisting with clinical procedures as required.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. To assist registered nurses with the delivery of haemodialysis to patients.
2. To ensure the set standards of care are maintained for all patients.
3. To ensure that patients' personal hygiene needs are met including skin, mouth, eye, foot, and nail care.
4. To assist patients in meeting their nutritional needs, including assisting with feeding of patients following assessment by a registered nurse trained to undertake dysphasia assessment, where appropriate.
5. To accurately record electrocardiograms as requested by registered practitioner.
6. To accurately record and report observations e.g. pulse, respiration, blood pressure, and temperature with the aid of specialist equipment as appropriate to the needs of the workplace.
7. To accurately measure blood glucose with the aid of specialist equipment, recording and reporting the results.
8. To undertake simple dressings utilising appropriate aseptic techniques as instructed by the registered nurse following appropriate training and assessment.
9. To ensure that appropriate moving and handling techniques and equipment are used when manual handling.
10. To accurately test urine samples, recording the results and also ensuring that the results are reported to the registered nurse.
11. To assist in health education or information giving as indicated by the registered nurse.
12. To answer the telephone and take messages as required.
13. To take specimens to laboratories as required.
14. To observe patients during their dialysis for any signs of deterioration and respond appropriately while escalating.
15. To observe patients during their dialysis treatment for line disconnection or arterio-venous dislodgment.
16. To safely remove arterio-venous fistula needle as per Renal Clinical Practice.
17. To support the registered nurse as second on call to provide 1:1 emergency out of hours dialysis, including assisting the doctor in the procedure room with line insertions.

Qualifications
* QCF/NVQ level 2 in healthcare or equivalent qualification
* Maths and English qualification A-C/4-9 or equivalent
* Care Certificate or ability to complete within 12 months of commencing employment
