Why this job matters
The purpose of this role is to lead on design and test activities within our Global Reach platforms. The purpose of the Network Design Specialist role is to deliver network designs for Global Reach network platforms and/or customer solutions. Specifically, this role is accountable for:
* Driving efficiency and scalability through the re-use of IP/VPN network designs and ongoing in-life operation of designs across the overall Global Reach network platforms and/or customer solution.
* Typically leading a matrix (virtual) team of technical experts/contractors to deliver network design solutions and provide technical thought leadership to a larger matrix team. The sphere of influence for the matrix team will be from a technical perspective.
* Acting as a technical ambassador for the company and providing expert technical consulting to customers at a platform and/or overall solution level.
* Deciding on design scope and design of the overall Global Reach network platforms and/or customer solution.
What you’ll be doing – your accountabilities
The purpose of the Network Design Specialist engineer role is to lead the design of IP/VPN technologies. Specifically, this role is accountable for:
* Design accountability for new features into Global Reach platforms.
* Provide thought leadership to senior internal stakeholders and customers regarding aspects of Global Reach platforms and/or customer solutions.
* Point of contact for technical expertise to senior stakeholders, internal and external.
* Mentor and share knowledge with others and be an advanced user of design tools.
* Create and develop architecture patterns and design techniques for BT and/or customers.
* Lead on resolving customer impacting issues regarding the overall network platform and/or customer solution.
* Solve problems that tend to arise from the interaction of multiple components and usually are complex and unknown related to the overall IP/VPN platform and/or customer solution and involve vendor interworking issues.
* Raise and resolve implementation issues with suppliers and other designers.
* Resolve in-life issues to overall network platform and/or customer solution, as appropriate.
* Lead a matrix team as appropriate within Global Reach.
* Estimate the time and type of resource needed to support deliverables with increasing cost impact and time duration.
* Drive transformation specifically in terms of automation.
The skills you’ll need to succeed
* Specialist knowledge of IP/VPN technologies and vendors (Cisco/Juniper)
* Specialist knowledge of relevant emerging network/software technologies.
* Experience of leading matrix teams to deliver network designs and testing.
* Software development skills specifically in solving network issues / activities.
* Experience in resolution of customer impacting network issues.
* Prior experience of designing network solutions in a service provider setting.
* Working knowledge of CI/CD principles and tools such as Gitlab is essential.
* Working knowledge of automation test frameworks such as Behavior Driven Development (BDD) and/or Robot Framework is desirable.
* Member of a professional body e.g. Institution of Engineering and Technology.
Experience you’d be expected to have
* Leader of matrix technology team.
* Delivery of IP network design.
* Ability to lead / coach teams to change and develop an innovative, challenging, and supportive team culture.
