Job Duties
Norfolk State University (NSU) invites candidates for the position of Groundskeepers. The objective of the Facilities Management Department shall be to provide a campus environment that is conducive to a clean, comfortable, safe and well-maintained facilities and grounds for students, faculty, and staff (to include annual safety inspections), repair, renovation and construction of campus buildings, facilities and infrastructure.
The Groundskeeper, under supervision, performs a variety of manual duties in the development and maintenance of the grounds in recreational, housing, building and parking areas as directed within the campus to include the outside perimeters of the campus, housing residential areas, academic building area, and other areas as defined.
Duties and responsibilities include:
1. Maintains the appearance of the University grounds and providing operational and labor services.
2. Performs all tasks necessary for routine turf maintenance of campus landscape.
3. Monitors campus grounds maintaining all hard surfaces, landscape beds, turf areas, building docks and entrances free of trash and debris. Empty and clean outdoor trash barrels.
4. Performs seasonal routine landscape related maintenance/ projects.
5. Performs proper planting techniques for trees, shrubbery, ground covers, bulbs, perennials and annuals. Proper bed maintenance techniques such as weeding, edging, mulching grooming of lawns, plant removal/replacement, seasonal cleanup, pruning and deadheading.
6. Assists in preparation of grounds for special events; including event preparation, setup and breakdown, litter control and site restoration.
7. Prepares a variety of semiskilled manual duties requiring a basic understanding and knowledge of techniques, tools, equipment, and safety precautions.
8. Operates and handles various types of grounds maintenance equipment to include, but not limited to: power mowers, groomers, artificial turf groomers, line trimmers, chain saws, power edger’s, roto-tillers, blowers, aerators, scarifier and sod cutters.
9. Operates light – or- medium-weight trucks to pick up and deliver materials and supplies.
10. Reports and documents any equipment repair needs to Maintenance Supervisor and Lead Groundskeeper.
11. Instructs laborers, trainees, and other workers as needed.
12. Loads and unloads furniture and other materials, and transports them to designated locations utilizing various equipment as needed.
13. Provide snow removal efforts to include ice melt application, snow shoveling and the safe operation of various snow removal machinery and equipment.
14. Ability to safety and independently exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/ or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
15. Works on weekends, evening, and holidays as required.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Knowledge of standards grounds maintenance operations, and a familiarity with maintaining and using grounds equipment.
2. Demonstrated ability to make minor repairs to grounds equipment as needed.
3. Skilled in the use of grounds and landscape equipment to include mowers (push and riding), saws, tillers, sprinklers, shovels, rakes, and tractors.
4. Skilled in the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
5. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record and must be insurable.
6. High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. High school diploma or GED or equivalent combination of training and education that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities.
2. Previous experience working as a landscaper or grounds and maintenance worker.
