The role
As a CT Passenger Assistant, a typical day will be escorting and assisting passengers to board and alight vehicles safely in their daily journey with us to and from school. The needs of our passengers will cover a range of medical and behaviour conditions and as a Passenger Assistant you will be responsible for their care, safety and wellbeing during the journey.

Main responsibilities
1. Be responsible for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of passengers at all times.
2. Receive/convey passengers from/to their home address or other agreed point from the parent/carer into the vehicle provided and receive and pass relevant information about the passenger’s wellbeing.
3. Assist passengers when the lift, ramp or any other boarding aid is required and to ensure their comfort and safety
4. Ensure that safety standards are maintained at all times, for example by ensuring that doors are properly closed, seatbelts fastened, wheelchairs fastened down appropriately before the vehicle moves off.
5. Manage effects of unexpected incidents e.g. vehicle breakdown, change in passengers, and ensure the safe evacuation of the vehicle and supervision of the passengers in the event of an emergency
6. Maintain discipline amongst the passengers travelling in the vehicle and prevent distractions to the driver.
7. Report any specific problems concerning the conduct or behaviour of passengers on the vehicle both to the head of the establishment and to the Supervisor.
8. Deal appropriately with medical or personal hygiene issues.
9. Work with the driver to keep the vehicle clean and tidy before, during and after the journey, including following any enhanced cleaning routine where necessary.
10. Work within the time frames required by route schedules and work as part of a team.
11. Take responsibility for ensuring the health and safety of yourself, your colleagues and your passengers, in accordance with the requirements of the company’s Health and Safety Policy and all relevant legislation.
12. Carry out duties with full regard to CT’s Equal Opportunities Policy, to include respect for staff and members of the public from different backgrounds, cultures and abilities.
13. Follow safeguarding guidelines to maintain and promote a culture of openness, honesty and awareness.
14. Comply with the rules and procedures in the Employee Handbook.
15. Undertake any professional training and personal development identified as appropriate to the role, as determined by your Manager or a service purchaser.
16. Undertake any other tasks or duties as requested providing that these are relevant to running an effective passenger service and are commensurate with the status and remuneration for this post.

Essential skills/training
17. Experience of working within a similar role as a Passenger Assistant or Escort.
18. Good understanding of the needs of individuals with varying disabilities
19. An understanding and commitment to equality and diversity
20. An understanding of client confidentiality
21. The ability to communicate effectively with passengers, carers, relatives and staff
22. Experience of working with equipment for wheelchairs and wheelchair passengers
