Glaucoma Fellow - Department of Ophthalmology
Grade: Trust (post CCT or equivalent)
Hours: Full time (approx 40 hours/week)
We are looking for a dedicated and approachable Glaucoma Fellow to join our team in managing glaucoma services within Leeds. This position would suit a post-CCT doctor who has demonstrable interest in Glaucoma with prior training in higher specialty Glaucoma surgery. Competence in cataract surgery is also desirable.

The job comprises a mix of Glaucoma Outpatient Clinics, opportunities to join Consultant Glaucoma theatre sessions, SLT and YAG Laser Sessions, Virtual Pathway development and review work, and Acute Service cover.
The post is available from February 2025 for 12 months fixed term. Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice at the time of appointment.
Main duties of the job
This is a glaucoma job and you will be an independent decision maker with full support from the Glaucoma Consultant Team. We undertake SLT, YAG lasers, trabeculectomy and various MIGS (Preserflo and Istent) as surgical options. The post holder may be expected to cover on-call duties and also frequently review casualty and general ophthalmology patients.
The post holder will also be expected to develop a deeper understanding of management issues within Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.

Person Specification
Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
* Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems, prioritise clinical need, maximise safety and minimise risk.
* Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives.
* Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
* Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice with at least 4 years experience in medical/surgical specialities by the time of intended start date.
* Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication & capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation.
* Evidence of involvement in an audit project, a quality improvement project, formal research project or other activity.
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements.
Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills
* Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
* Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application.
* Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application.
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
Clinical Experience and Career Progression
* Subspecialty experience in glaucoma, to include assessment, diagnosis and management of glaucoma and ocular hypertension in the out-patient setting.
* Knowledge and experience of current imaging and surveillance modalities in glaucoma.
* Experience in assessment, diagnosis and management of acute glaucoma in the emergency setting.
* 36 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice.
* Evidence of achievement of CT/ST1 competencies in medicine or surgery (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training or Core Surgical Training).
* Further experience of managing surgical glaucoma patients, including their post-operative review.
* Experience in delivering glaucoma laser procedures such as YAG laser peripheral iridotomy, selective laser trabeculoplasty and argon laser peripheral iridoplasty.
* Knowledge and experience of the virtual clinic pathway in glaucoma.
