THE ROLE
The BBC’s Product Engineering function is looking to appoint a Head of Engineering for 3rd Party to play a key role in the engineering of the BBC’s audience-facing digital products and a best-in-class engineering culture.
Main Responsibilities
As Head of Software Engineering for 3rd Party you will drive the high standards and consistent execution of large third party software engineering teams across multiple locations, onshore and nearshore, leading change and improvement across the board and working closely with peers in Engineering & Architecture to shape the technical vision of our overall digital estate.
Your key day-to-day responsibilities will include:
* Manage the 3rd party technical partnerships, onshore and nearshore development teams on behalf of Engineering. This role is accountable for the quality, cost and reporting controls that frame our 3rd party engagements.
* Own supplier relationships that are specific to engineering for externally provided technical software, libraries and development tooling.
* Be responsible for the culture, behaviours and engagement of the teams you lead, being a visible and accessible leader to a large and diverse team.
* Define a technical vision and strategy for your area that is aligned with our product goals, collaborating with your peers across Engineering & Architecture.
* Align the development approach with the overall BBC Engineering strategy.
* Drive improvements in our continuous delivery/integration practices, as well as continue to develop our cloud practices.
* Ensure our products are operationally excellent and always available to the audience.
* Ensure our tech evolves and the teams are enabled to deliver effectively and efficiently.
* Ensure software engineering best practices are adhered to across teams.
* Provide exceptional people leadership including performance management, talent development, and resource planning, helping to create a diverse, inclusive, and supportive environment.
* Manage stakeholders proactively and closely at Senior Leader level across Product Group and across the BBC.
* Engage cross-disciplinarily, leading by example on a collaborative approach to problem solving, working side by side with peers in Product, Data, Delivery & UXD.
* Contribute as a keen and valued member of the Engineering Leadership team and the broader Product Group leadership community; proactively lead on Engineering and People and Culture topics for the benefit of Product Group as a whole.
* Work across a wider set of engineering capabilities.
* Support the Director, Product Engineering – Enablement by delivering technical initiatives within the Engineering group, reporting on those initiatives as needed.
Are You The Right Candidate?
The ideal candidate will evidence the following skills and experience:
* Demonstrable experience leading engineering teams at scale across multiple locations, working closely with 3rd party partnerships.
* A digital leader with gravitas to work effectively with senior colleagues and inspire, motivate and drive change through a large engineering team.
* Ability to present to and influence C-Level colleagues.
* A team player who can coach, develop and mentor the engineering community, and also provide leadership amongst your peers.
* A behavioural role model for the BBC’s values.
* Experience of agile software delivery at scale with a strong view of what good looks like with respect to continuous delivery, enabling speed without compromise to quality.
* Knowledge of cloud computing and micro-service architectures with experience of multiple application domains ideally including web, mobile and/or TV.
* Ability to travel across the UK and internationally as needed.

Band: F
Contract type: 1 x continuing (permanent) role
Location: London (hybrid working) with travel across the UK and internationally as needed to nurture partnerships and support the growth of our software engineering teams at scale.
Career Path Framework job pay range: up to £148,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
