Role
Practical management work, species surveys, nest-box building etc. is all done by volunteers so extra pairs of hands are always welcome!
Volunteers attend work parties, usually held on Thursday mornings. Work takes place at a variety of sites, ranging from one in Felmingham in the east to one in Wood Norton in the west of our current area. Most of our work is done closer to Cromer – particularly in Sustead and the Beckhams.
The work we do involves cutting, raking, sawing, clearing and, if people have the relevant skills, a certain amount of carpentry. You do as much or as little as you want – there is never any pressure on volunteers to do anything you don’t want to do or to stay longer than you feel like doing. Tools and refreshments are provided!
Time Commitment
There are usually two work parties a month – on Thursday mornings between 9am and 12.30. Occasionally there will be one on a Saturday. Invitations are sent out around a week before each work party and people respond with whether they can come or not. Some come every time; others maybe only once every two months or so.
About the Organisation
Felbeck Trust’s aim is to help to restore and improve the Norfolk countryside for the benefit of wildlife and to provide places of peaceful enjoyment for local communities and visitors alike. We look after around 13 sites in North Norfolk, most of them no more than an acre or two. We aim to increase the biodiversity of each site whilst encouraging the general public to enjoy the sites. Many of the sites were surveyor’s allotments – patches of land given to the old surveyors – the men who used to look after parish roads and needed places to get gravel and sand for road repairs.
