The job itself
18 year old man is looking for a support worker for 4 hours per week during term time and 8 hours per week during holidays 2 x 4 hours. Hours of work during term time would be 4 hours on either a Saturday or Sunday with flexible hours of 9am – 1pm or 1pm – 5pm. During the holidays days of work will be agreed in advance.
The role is to support young man with accessing the community, engaging in activities of interest and exploring encouraging new activities.
Young man enjoys being active, swimming, walking, being out and about in the community and nature. Also likes walks into town for shopping and travelling on the buses and taxis. Enjoys trips out, to such places as the deep / sealife centre. Likes being around people and observing what is happening, as well as being involved as part of a group. Also enjoys doing jigsaws, playing Boccia, music, arts and crafts and bubble play. When at home young man likes to play games and watch videos and youtube.
Due to the young man's Autism and Learning Disability, he is extremely vulnerable to all forms of abuse and exploitation, he would, therefore need full support and supervision when out in the community. Support and supervision would also be required with toilet needs. He is generally nonverbal but will occasionally try to say some words, also uses Makaton to communicate sometimes or his own gestures such as rubbing his tummy when he is hungry. Young man is currently in sixth form and he uses a school ipad for communication.
We are seeking a support worker who is sensitive to and able to positively manage and respond to the needs of the young man, promoting privacy, dignity and maintaining confidentiality at all times.
The successful applicant will have an understanding nature and be supportive and patient with the ability to manage situations and vulnerabilities. The candidate should be enthusiastic, resourceful, and proactive. Effective communication is essential therefore the candidate must be thoughtful and considerate in their communication and actions.
Car driver is essential.
Experience of supporting young people with learning disabilities and difficulties is essential.
