Desk Based Staff Engineer
As a Desk Based Staff Engineer, you will assess and negotiate settlements for vehicle and machinery claims through remote inspections. Ensuring claims are handled efficiently and in line with industry codes and NFU Mutual procedures, you will deliver fair outcomes for customers whilst managing costs effectively.
Your role will involve conducting image-based inspections to verify repair costs, policy coverage, and indemnity. You'll research, negotiate, and authorise repair methods in accordance with quality standards and regulatory requirements. Additionally, you will compile and record technical information, contribute to policy decisions, and establish market valuations for stolen or unrecovered vehicles and machinery.
Building strong relationships with members, third parties, repairers, engineers, and other stakeholders will be key to ensuring smooth claims processing. You'll also support the resolution of potential complaints, identify areas for improvement, and provide technical guidance to colleagues to enhance knowledge and teamwork within the department.
About you
We are seeking a professional with prior experience in vehicle inspection within an insurance or workshop environment. You will have a strong understanding of motor claims, particularly within the car and light commercial sector and you will possess a Vehicle Damage Assessor (VDA) accreditation.
Ideally, you will also hold a Salvage AQP qualification or be willing to gain this with our support. Membership of the Institute of Automotive Engineer Assessors (IAEA) would also be an advantage.
You will have the ability to communicate clearly and confidently, both in writing and over the phone, ensuring technical information is conveyed effectively. You will have strong negotiation skills, able to assess repair costs, challenge estimates where necessary, and secure fair settlements that align with policy terms and customer needs. Attention to detail is also essential, allowing you to review claims accurately, assess repair methods, and maintain clear, precise records.
You will also be able to demonstrate the following:
* Excellent problem-solving skills - enabling you to evaluate complex claims, resolve disputes, and make sound decisions in line with company policies and regulations
* Strong customer focus - allowing you to handle claims with professionalism and empathy, ensuring positive outcomes while balancing business objectives
* Accountability - you won't hesitate to take full accountability for your decisions, working independently to manage claims efficiently whilst contributing to the success of the wider team.
