Job overview
To ensure the 111 service is delivered safely, consistently and to an appropriate standard. The post holder will act as a clinical resource to patients and staff and undertake operational management of the service in addition to the active participation in quality audit and training.
Main duties of the job
As a Shift Manager within South Central Ambulance Service, you will be required to provide leadership to your team to ensure the effective provision of the service they provide and to champion change in the organisation. You will ensure that your staff are motivated and express a positive attitude towards the organisation. You will address any issues and concerns that may inhibit your staff from achieving both their personal and organizational goals.
1. To work as an autonomous practitioner to support other practitioners within the operational environment using knowledge, skills, critical thinking and professional judgement supported by clinical assessment software.
2. To provide healthcare advice supported by clinical assessment software and facilitate onward referral to other professionals if required.
3. To liaise and communicate clinical information verbally and via technical links with health economy partners to ensure continuity of care for the caller.
4. To maintain and ensure clinical safety and maintenance of a high-quality service to those patients who call 111.
5. To work towards service delivery targets, clinical indicators, and national and locally negotiated targets.
6. To attend and actively participate in regular management meetings and work with the line manager to improve and/or consistently maintain performance.
7. To actively participate in regular call monitoring and quality of call handling to include call review and self-reflection.
8. To ensure continued professional development through mandatory training and within personal development plans.
9. To provide clinical and professional expertise as required to call centre colleagues.
10. To support and participate in the provision of core training where appropriate.
11. To review, evaluate and recommend revisions of clinical assessment software.
12. To operate within all local and national policies, procedures and protocols provided.
13. To comply with Clinical Governance standards including audit and customer satisfaction programmes, and to ensure continuous development of a quality service.
14. To adhere to your Professional code of conduct at all times.
15. To maintain professional standards and representation of South Central Ambulance Service Trust both internally and externally.
16. To manage Clinical Advisors on a daily basis, including responsibility for recruitment, attendance management, performance management and appraisal.
Person specification
* Recognized professional qualification, e.g. registered general nurse (RN1, RNA), ECP or Paramedic - Valid registration with NMC / HPC.
* Managed a team.
* Audit, evaluation and clinical governance experience.
* Extensive clinical knowledge.
* Ability to communicate effectively: aurally, orally and in writing.
* Flexible and available to work at short notice.
* Sympathetic, respectful and caring approach to others.
* Motivated towards further professional development.
* Previous experience of telephone consultation.
* Confident in dealing with complex calls in emergencies and out of hours.
* Teaching or assessing qualification.
