During an exciting time within Respiratory medicine at the trust we are looking to appoint a consultant to consolidate the services currently provided by the Trust. The vision is to expand the department to 11 WTE consultants. The posts involve out-patient, in-patient duties and a regular commitment to 7 day working. We are particularly looking for an individual with an interest in Sleep and TB.
This is a full-time post providing 10 Programmed Activities (PAs), but applicants wishing to work part-time are also encouraged to apply and job plans will be adjusted accordingly, and by negotiation with appointees.
Main duties of the job
The respiratory medicine in-patient bed base is now on one site. We have introduced a respiratory weekend rota with a respiratory Consultant present every weekend. Overnight on-calls are now part of a Respiratory rota, separate from GIM. Applications are encouraged from all consultants wishing to take up a new challenge or newly accredited consultants who will be supported through our highly regarded development programmes. The post holders will be encouraged to develop his/her own sub-specialty interests.
Job responsibilities
The Trust wishes to ensure that Consultants have time in their job plan to undertake Supporting Professional Activities which underpin and maintain high quality patient care. The Trust Board and Local Negotiating Committee have agreed that a Core allocation of 1.5 SPAs should be allocated to undertake CPD, appraisal, clinical supervision, audit and clinical governance, mandatory training and the general management of the service. Objectives should be agreed at the Job Plan review meeting with regards to this SPA.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* MRCP or equivalent
* All applicants must have Specialist registration for Respiratory (or within 6 months of being admitted to the register for trainees, if currently in a training programme in the UK) but consideration will be given to applicants with relevant consultant level experience or trainees in a UK training scheme who are within 6 months of attaining specialist registration.
* Applicants must be Registered with the General Medical Council and hold a Licence to Practise
Experience and Achievements
* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all aspects of the Respiratory specialty
* Also, should have significant minor procedures experience and any other post graduate qualifications that can advance the department needs would be preferable
* Understanding current issues within the wider NHS
* Attendance at a recognised management course
* Shows ability to work with and lead others across professions
Teaching and Training
* Experience of and enthusiasm for clinical teaching of postgraduate doctors and non-medical staff
* Academic achievements/evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications
* Training in clinical and educational supervision
* Attendance at a teaching course
Audit and Research
* Knowledge of Audit principles and evidence of participation in and completion of audit projects
* Critical Appraisal Skills
* Evidence of knowledge of research methodology
* Good communication and empathy skills with patients
* Evidence of willingness to participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment to provide an integrated service

* For areas requiring EPP Clearance (Exposure Prone Procedures), this will also be a requirement of the health screening
* An enhanced DBS disclosure will be required with the Disclosure and Barring Service
