We are looking for a Satcom New Concept Engineer to work at ESA’s ECSAT premises in Harwell, United Kingdom.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to support activities in the Telecommunication Satellite Domain for cutting-edge projects.
About the client and location
The European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Harwell, UK. With special focuses on the link between space and telecommunications, ECSAT also hosts ESA’s Earth Observation Climate Office. It is from here that ESA’s Climate Change Initiative programme is executed.
Tasks and activities
The scope of work will include:
1. Contribute to the gathering and analysis of business intelligence and market information related to the global satellite communications sector, the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry, as well as global economic and industrial trends and developments. Identify and investigate market and technology trends relevant to the development of the satcom sector.
2. Establish and maintain close relations and a continuous dialogue with industrial, academic, and institutional players from across the satellite communications sector: to properly understand, influence, and support their future development and growth plans.
3. Identify, study, and develop new satcom system concepts and applications: including new satellite system architectures and components; new services, applications, and use cases; and improving integration and interoperability with terrestrial systems. This includes supporting ESA in the definition, commissioning, management, and execution of technical and commercial studies and investigations (conducted both within ESA and with external partners) as well as specific effort to publicise and disseminate activity outcomes.
4. Identify and define future technology development activities, in terms of either feasibility demonstrations, product and system development support, or in-orbit validation and demonstration needs, as well as exploring ‘spin-in’ opportunities from other relevant high technology application areas.
5. Provide support to standardisation and regulatory activity to help create and develop new markets and growth opportunities for the satcom industry of the ESA Member States.
Skills and experience
The following skills and experience are mandatory:
1. Master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant Engineering discipline, with at least 4 years of proven relevant experience.
2. Knowledge of Satcom system architectures, products and market.
3. Knowledge and experience of telecommunication systems definition from requirement phase to implementation aspects.
4. Knowledge of industrial costs and schedule aspects.
5. Strong project management experience for complex project with high technical risk.
6. Experience in procurement processes and contract management as well as applied negotiation skills.
7. Knowledge of industrial development, verification and procurement processes.
8. Ability to gather and share relevant information.
9. Ability to support the definition of a technology development strategy.
10. Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
11. Solution oriented mindset, with a customer focused communication skill.
12. Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:
1. Experience in system and subsystem design and development in the telecommunications sector.
2. Experience in the satellite communication industry.
