Job Description
AECOM offers a comprehensive service to clients seeking cost-effective, buildable, state-of-the-art infrastructure projects which incorporate tunnels and underground structures. The AECOM team has proven global design experience covering a wide range of tunnels in varying and challenging geological conditions. Our collaborative team has successfully delivered sustainable landmark infrastructure projects in today’s congested cities.
Tunnelling engineers generally work as part of large, multidisciplinary teams to deliver technically challenging projects which greatly enhance the National infrastructure. Tunnelling engineering graduates at AECOM will work on a range of projects including:
1. Work within a wide range of sectors offering a challenging and varied workload, including: Water transfer tunnels; Highway tunnels; High Speed, Standard & light rail; Mining; Airport infrastructure; Onshore & offshore tunnels; Power tunnels.
2. Application of civil, structural and geotechnical knowledge gained throughout your degree to design buried reinforced concrete structures.
3. Feasibility studies & optioneering, through preliminary and detailed design; understanding how designs can be constructed safely.
4. Tunnel, shaft and cavern designs in hard & soft ground using various construction methods.
5. Identifying and resolving complex engineering problems using finite element software backed up by solid empirical methods.
6. Leading small projects or elements of larger projects and providing support and advice to other team members.
7. Identifying opportunities to expand the existing business through effective communication.
Qualifications:
1. A degree in Civil or Civil & Structural Engineering with a 2:1 classification or above (or equivalent).
2. An MSc/MEng in Soil Mechanics/Structural/Tunnelling Engineering would be an advantage.
3. Any previous construction experience would also prove advantageous.
4. Willing and able to work towards a professional qualification (ICE or IStructE).
5. Demonstrable interest in tunnelling projects and an understanding of tunnelling activities in the transport and utility sectors.
6. Commercial awareness to satisfy client and business expectations.
7. Effective communication skills to internal and external clients, both verbally & in writing.
8. Ability to structure & prioritize work effectively through close cooperation with the team.
9. Ability to work independently without losing initiative & focus.
