Due to expansion within our faculty, we are currently recruiting a Specialty doctor; within the Medicine directorate; at Basildon University Hospital a part of the exciting and newly formed MSE Trust. This gives the successful applicant an excellent opportunity to gain firsthand medical experience in an environment where a more specialised service can be experienced in detail.
This post would be suitable for any doctor who has successfully completed a Foundation School or equivalent program as well as 4 years Internal Medicine/ Elderly Care experience or has achieved the equivalent competencies.
Ideally candidates will have an up-to-date certification for Adult Life Support training or be able to fulfil the necessary qualification upon appointment. Although this appointment is not accredited for training through HEE, the appointee will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training program within each department and the hospital.
Ward rounds with relevant consultants and management of all patients on the wards, and any outlying wards.
Referral of patients to other specialties.
Necessary emergency investigations e.g., blood samples for crossmatch, X-ray etc.
Appropriate discharge of patients after discussion with senior team members.
Performing bedside practical procedures e.g., venous blood sampling, ABGs, urinary catheter insertion, LP etc.
Gaining experience in the outpatient setting whenever appropriate under senior supervision.
Supervision and education of medical students (UCL and ARU students) and junior doctors using a combination of ward-based and classroom sessions.
Our wards are divided 5 Elderly care wards. At least two consultants cover the inpatients at any one time supported by the team of specialty trainees, ST/IMTs and Foundation trainees, as well as nursing and therapy support staff.
Basildon & Thurrock Hospitals have received University Hospital designation for the close association with University College Medical School, for which it is one of the biggest undergraduate DGH sites. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical undergraduates and will have the opportunity to develop teaching skills.
