We have an exciting opportunity to join our specialist in-house Apheresis team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT) that has been remodelled to meet the demands of an expanding service. This is a permanent band 7 role within the Adult Haematology Apheresis service.
The Clinical Haematology service runs one of the largest blood and marrow transplant programmes (allogeneic and autologous) in Europe, successfully achieving and maintaining JACIE accreditation status, while operating as a specialist tertiary centre. We are a large unit with a total of 58 inpatient beds across three wards that include designated haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) beds. There are also dedicated outpatient and day care facilities that incorporate Ambulatory care and the Apheresis service. We take pride in the fact that we provide a full programme of specialist Apheresis services 24/7 with on-call provision and also an outreach TPE Neurology service.
Main duties of the job
* Therapeutic apheresis is a highly specialist technology that provides a comprehensive range of treatment procedures that can involve the separation, removal and replacement of blood components and constituents. The expanded clinical application of this treatment modality in recent years has enabled patients with a wide variety of diseases to be treated; leukodepletion for blood cancers, plasma exchange for haematology and neurology patients, including those with vaccine induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITTS), as well as collection of cellular products/harvesting of donors to support the haematopoietic stem cell transplant programme.
* More recently, the main driver for growth in apheresis procedures has been that of automated red cell exchanges (RCE), which has become the NICE approved gold standard treatment for patients with sickle cell disease. It is anticipated that as ICHNT is also the nominated haemoglobinopathy coordinating centre (HCC) for West London, the demands placed on the therapeutic RCE programme will continue to grow across the North West London network.
* The role will provide an opportunity to expand Apheresis skills across a wide range of procedures, to increase awareness of regulatory requirements/standards, to work in a haematology/HSCT tertiary centre, to further develop vascular access skills, and to participate in research/clinical trials and shape future Apheresis services.
