Exeter School is the leading co-educational day school in the Southwest, educating over 1,000 pupils aged 3-18. We are looking to appoint a fixed term teacher of biology to join our school, a school of great character.
For September 2025, we seek an enthusiastic, well-qualified biology graduate to join this strong department. This post is covering maternity leave and is for approximately one year, subject to the permanent postholder’s return. This position would be equally suited to either a newly qualified or a more experienced applicant. There may be the opportunity to also teach chemistry and key stage three and/or key stage four. The applicant should be keen to contribute to the broader life of the school through cultural, sporting or other extra-curricular activities.
The Biology department has three full-time and three part-time specialist biology teachers. The laboratories are very well serviced by one term-time biology technician in conjunction with the Technician Coordinator and other members of the science technician team. The department is situated within the Science Centre which provides specialist accommodation for the three separate sciences, Electronics and Computer Science. The department consists of four laboratories, a staff work area and office, and a preparation room. Each laboratory is well equipped with basic apparatus supported by more specialist equipment from the prep room.
In terms of public examinations, biology is a very successful department. It is a popular subject at A Level and has achieved over 80% A*-B over the last two years. Outcomes at IGCSE are also very good with well over 90% of grades being 9-6 in the last four years of the new specification. Around 20-30% of Year 11 pupils take IGCSE Double Award Science.
The department runs an annual residential field trip for A Level pupils, GCSE Science Live trip and organises visits from external speakers including a Digestion Dome for Year 8. Alongside a variety of internal competitions, we offer sixth form the chance to enter the RSB Biology Olympiad, and we enter Year 10 in the Biology Challenge. We also have a very well attended Medical Society with strong links to the Exeter University Medical School.
The closing date for applications is Friday 21 March 2025 at noon. We anticipate that interviews will be held on Friday 28 March 2025.
The role will attract a competitive salary as well as generous benefits including employer pension contribution, free school lunch during term time, free on-site parking, discretionary staff discount on school fees and use of indoor swimming pool and fitness suite.
