Who we are.
James’ Place works to save the lives of men in suicidal crisis.
Suicide is the leading single cause of death for men under 35 and men are three times more likely than women to die by suicide. The suicide rate in 2023 was the highest in England and Wales since 1999. We believe that suicide is preventable with the right treatment at the right time; we exist to stop men dying by suicide.
We are a charity offering free, life-saving treatment to suicidal men at our centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle.
* We treat men and those identifying as males across the North East, North West, London, and the surrounding area.
* We help men in suicidal crisis find hope for the future.
* We stop men from dying by suicide. Our professional therapists get quickly to the heart of a man’s suicidal crisis and help him solve it.
* We are unique because our treatment is proven to work, quick to access and delivered in a safe, friendly, non-clinical environment by trained, professional therapists.
* We have treated over 2,300 suicidal men since the opening of our first centre in 2018.
* Men can self-refer or be referred to us by a professional, including those working in health and community services, or by a friend or family member.
What makes us different
* Treatment: Our treatment works. Men experience a clinically and statistically significant positive change following treatment and reduced levels of psychological distress.
* Time: We see men quickly with no waiting list.
* People: All our therapists are trained professionals. Men have the same therapist throughout their treatment.
* Place: We deliver treatment in our safe, friendly and non-clinical centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle.
* Partners: We work alongside the NHS and other local support services, taking on clinical responsibility for the men we treat.
Philanthropic income has always been a critical element of James’ Place income, especially its role in enabling us to build new centres. We are now looking to hire a new lead role to drive forward our philanthropy programme across the UK and, in doing so, help us to open and sustain new centres whilst building sustainability in our fundraising for the long term.
The strategic direction is set, and the organisation’s vision and aims are clearly laid out in a new business plan for 2024-2027. You will be responsible for following leads and securing the organisation’s biggest gifts. Whilst there is no line management, there is a strong team around you, and you have the opportunity to support their development.
Our Appeal
* We know there are men in urgent need of our life-saving treatment.
* We need to raise £13 million to open and run two new centres as well as to sustain our existing centres over the next three years.
* Birmingham will be the location of our next centre. We hope to open there in 2025.
* With five centres across the country, we can treat 2,000 men a year.
