Job Purpose
The academic aim of the lectureship would be to allow research development to support intermediate fellowship applications by the end of the lectureship and eventual growth to an independent academic career.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Research
The appointee will have an established interest in research with a record of achievement in an area relevant to existing interests in the School of Infection and Immunity within the College of MVLS. The appointee will be expected to:
1. Develop a programme of research under supervision of senior investigators in the School of Infection and Immunity, in a subject area in basic and/or translational and/or clinical science related to Bacteriology, Virology, Immunobiology, or Parasitology.
2. Plan, design and implement projects with collaborators as appropriate; and to contribute to and submit grant applications and publications of impactful papers.
For this post, the applicant will develop their programme of research under the supervision of senior academic staff in the chosen department. There are extensive laboratory and clinical facilities for research within the School of Infection and Immunity, College of MVLS, and related Schools within the University of Glasgow. Academic support will be available during all annual research and training assessments to ensure that there is adequate balance between academic and clinical training. In addition to annual reviews of clinical progress, there will be reviews of academic progress within the School.
Teaching
The anticipation is that protected non-clinical time will be predominantly used for research. This post is not suitable for trainees wishing to develop a predominantly teaching or educational portfolio. However, it is expected that the Lecturer will contribute to delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities. These might include:
1. Teaching of clinical skills and other vocational training activities, including seminars and tutorials.
2. Teaching or supervision within Postgraduate taught or research courses within the School of Infection and Immunity.
Administrative Duties
The Lecturer will contribute to administrative duties related to research and general running of the School or research theme as directed by their supervisor.
Clinical Duties
Clinical duties will be arranged following discussion with the relevant Training Programme Director in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine. The purpose of a Clinical Lectureship is to ensure that candidates acquire a CCT, and appropriate clinical training opportunities will be arranged to ensure that this can occur within the duration of the Lectureship. Responsibilities, including on call duties and specialty training will be arranged as necessary depending on the appointee's current training and needs in conjunction with the Training Programme Director and local clinical and educational supervisors. Clinical training in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine is approximately 75:25. Clinical academic training will be the focus of the post with an 80:20 split between clinical and academic activity. The allocation of research and clinical time is flexible and various patterns of working are possible to suit differing research and clinical requirements. Applications will be welcome from trainees who are working less than full time, and the job plan will be adapted where possible to suit such trainees.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
1. MBChB or equivalent and full registration with General Medical Council (for non-UK candidates, GMC registration would be required before taking up the post).
2. MRCP or equivalent.
3. Applicants must already have a national training number in Infectious Diseases & General Internal Medicine at the time of taking up the post.
Desirable:
1. BMedSci, BSc or equivalent intercalated degree in medicine or related subject.
2. MD or PhD awarded or submitted.
Experience/Training
Essential:
1. Clinical experience in Infectious Diseases and General Internal Medicine, following completion of Internal Medicine Training (IMT) or equivalent general medical training.
2. Clinical or relevant laboratory research experience.
Desirable:
1. Experience and aptitude for clinical work in the specialty of Infectious Diseases & General Internal Medicine.
2. An interest in a sub-speciality related to the research interests represented in the School, as described above.
3. Previous evidence of oral and poster presentations.
4. Evidence of publication or experience in writing.
5. Evidence of distinction in career to date e.g. prizes, awards, bursaries.
6. Experience of teaching and/or mentoring junior colleagues and undergraduates.

Essential:
1. Self-motivation and the ability to work independently.
2. Good organisational and IT skills.
3. Ability to manage research projects.
4. Ability to work towards the School, College and University objectives.
5. Excellent communication skills with all stakeholders in research.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be on the Clinical Academic scale £43,504 - £64,461 per annum. The post will carry an additional entitlement depending on on-call responsibilities. This banding payment is paid under a separate arrangement with the NHS for which the University acts as paymaster only. This post is full time and fixed term for up to 6 years.
