Eye Casualty is an exciting, busy department which manages the care of eye patients needing urgent assessment, diagnosis and treatment. We also have elective laser activity and a Rapid Access clinic. As part of planned improvements, we are increasing the number of our Band 5 staff nurses. The successful candidates will be able to access a specialist development programme, with mentoring and educational support, that may lead, when the opportunity arises, to training as a Nurse Practitioner. This a great opportunity to join an ever-expanding specialty.
The post holder will be required to work various shifts to support the needs of the service. This includes working weekdays, weekends, bank holiday days and varying hours with the earliest start time at 7:00am and latest finish time of 10:00pm. As an Eye Casualty Staff Nurse you will be responsible for patient care in Eye Casualty and Laser Suite. This will also involve coordinating the department, problem-solving, planning and implementing patient care and ensuring colleagues adhere to Trust policies and guidelines. If you have achieved the ophthalmic programme training, you will be expected to use this in the course of managing and triaging your patients.
You may have the opportunity to further expand your skills within the Band 5 role by learning the use of slit lamp and Goldmann's applanation tonometer, use of Log mar, assisting medical practitioner in the treatment of eye emergency such as suturing, intravitreal injections.

Eye Casualty is currently open from 07:00 until 22:00 hours and 7 days a week so any applicants must be able to work flexibly for those hours and on any of those days. It is a busy but very interesting and specialised area to work in.
You will need to demonstrate the ability to be adaptable and be able to work flexibly in diverse clinical environments maintaining clinical experience as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 5 Registered Nurse to join the Eye Casualty and Laser Suite at QMC.
KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical
HWB 2 Be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the
HWB6 Development of programmes of care ensuring that these are evaluated and amended as appropriate.
Core 1 Document the condition and progress of patients and report to medical staff and/or senior nursing staff any areas of concern.
HWB 5 Undertake nursing procedures and techniques in accordance with agreed policies and guidelines, including intravenous cannulation, venepuncture and the administration of intravenous medications, intravenous fluorescein angiography and including specific procedures relevant to patients attending Eye Outpatients.
Core 2 Demonstrate clinical procedures to registered and unregistered staff as required.
HWB6 Once competent in team management skills, take charge of the clinical area on a regular basis in the absence of the person who has continuing responsibility or his/her deputy.
All Participate in the support and implementation of Essence of Care guidelines
HWB 5 Be aware of your role with regard to the Medicines Code of Practice.
Core 3 Comply with all Trust policies with particular regard to the policies and procedure carried out in the event of maintaining staff and patient safety.

Core 1 Report all accidents and untoward incidents to the nurse in charge of the area and complete an incident form in accordance with Trust policy.
Core 1 Maintain accurate patient records including the use of the Trusts electronic patient records system PAS.
Core 1 Communicate with and provide support for patients’ relatives, carers and visitors.
Core 1 Be aware of the need for confidentiality both within the written and spoken word, and electronic records, and ensure correct storage of and access to patients’ records at all times.

Managerial
Core 2 Support a culture of teamwork within the clinical area
Core 2 Collaborate with all members of the clinical area to ensure efficient running of the ward/unit/department.
Use resources effectively in order to provide quality patient care whilst having an awareness of budgetary issues.
Core 2 Assist the Sister/Charge Nurse in introducing new members of staff to their duties.
Core 3 Supervise registered and unregistered staff as appropriate.
Core 3 Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe keeping of patients’ property in accordance with Trust policy.
Core 2 Ensure where appropriate that the programmes of training for learners, both student nurses and nursing auxiliaries/health care assistants are completed.
Core 2 Undertake formal and informal teaching sessions as required and undertake training to act as a mentor to students.
Following appropriate training, carry the directorate/floor bleep.
Contribute to the monitoring and control of expenditure and use of resources.
