An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Technologist within the Clinical Engineering Team at the Whittington Health NHS Trust.
The post is for a Clinical Technologist with experience in the servicing of medical equipment and associated skills in clinical measurement and procedures.
1. The holder will be able to work as part of a team providing day to day support to all clinical areas.
2. Working at other Whittington Health NHS Trust sites may be required on occasions.
3. A good knowledge of the function and calibration of medical instrumentation and associated quality assurance and safety procedures is necessary.
Main duties of the job
Post summary:
The post holder will be responsible for all remedial repairs, Planned Preventative Maintenance and calibration of a wide range of medical devices. This will include patient monitors, infusion devices. In addition the acceptance into use and configuration of newly delivered medical devices and the evaluation of medical devices prior to purchase. On occasions this work will extend to non-medical electronic devices.
Maintenance and repair will take place in the main department workshops, hospitals, patients’ homes and other healthcare environments as part of Whittington Health NHS Trust and all Service Level Agreements (SLA) with other Trusts. Patients may be present who are subject to therapy, nursing or surgical procedures in the vicinity when fault investigation has to be done as a matter of urgency.
The post holder will be expected to work without any immediate managerial or supervisory support.
Manufacture training will be provided where needs are highlighted and in consultation between head of medical physics and the medical physics senior technologist.

Main duties:
All Clinical Technologists must be able to:
4. Maintain medical devices in the Community and all SLAs with Whittington Health.
5. Work at sites within the Whittington Health NHS Trust, and other SLA sites.
6. Work in accordance with management systems and processes introduced by Medical Physics Management.
7. Adhere to all Trust and department policies and procedure.
8. They will be subject to periodic internal audits.
9. To provide technical skills and knowledge in analysing complex faults on a range of medical equipment.
10. To liaise with manufacturers/service agents on complex technical issues relating to the repairs of medical equipment, the provision of spare parts and specialist test equipment.
11. To appraise the most cost effective repair option.
12. Use a range of specialised precision calibration and test equipment.
13. Ensure that medical devices are decontaminated prior to working on them.
14. Undertake planned preventative maintenance and safe repair of expensive complex medical equipment.
15. Undertake commissioning/acceptance testing of new and loan medical equipment.
16. Draft Minutes of meetings, both internally and externally, to the department as required.
17. Calibrate and safety test all medical equipment prior to issue to clinical areas
18. Updating the details on the computerised equipment management system relating to any work that has been allocated to them. They will maintain accurate, legible and retrievable electronic/written records (job reports) relating to the work that they have undertaken.
19. Comply with the procedures/work instructions under the Quality Management System.
20. Remove/condemn medical equipment when it is unsafe or beyond economical repair.
21. Report Adverse Incident Reports in accordance with the MHRA’s guidance.
22. Stand in and understand the Equipment Library procedures.
23. Order medical device spare parts using the Trust’s ordering system, including receipting of devices.
24. Develop planned preventative maintenance schedules/work instructions for the medical equipment supported by the team.
25. Attend external off-site service / repair requests.
26. Undertake suppliers and other external training provider’s courses to enable competency to be established in the support of a wide range of medical devices.
27. Undertake departmental training events and gain further experience by working on occasions, under the supervision of senior staff.
28. Participate in a scheme of continuing professional development that is recognised by and registered with an appropriate professional body.
29. Be subject to an annual appraisal.
30. Develop skills to use a wide range of test and measurement equipment, some of which are specific to the healthcare sector, to enable faults to be diagnosed and corrected on complex equipment, to module or component level.
31. Be able to support senior members with work involving the inspection and interaction with delicate, high value medical devices.
32. Be aware of the correct function and availability of devices have a direct effect on patient care.
33. Be responsible for establishing effective communication with the customer and suppliers; this will include advising the customer of any foreseen delay in the return of equipment to service. On occasions this will involve presenting technical information to senior nursing and clinical staff. It may require the use of e-mail and the telephone.
34. Ensure the accurate recording of maintenance undertaken on the equipment management database - will be responsible for updating the details on the computerised equipment management system relating to any work that has been allocated to them. They will maintain accurate, legible and retrievable electronic/written records (job reports) relating to the work that they have undertaken.
35. Be responsible for the planning and prioritisation of their own workload that has been allocated by the Medical Physics Team Leader.
36. Support/assist in equipment library activities and also assist and support as and when required by Medical Physics Team Leader.
37. Travel between Whittington Health NHS Trust sites, this includes the community, SLA and any other sites which we are or will be responsible for maintaining medical equipment.
38. Carry out activities out of his/her remit occasionally, this may be supervised or unsupervised in consultation with Medical Physics Team Leader and Head of Medical Physics.
39. Attend Departmental meetings in order to remain appraised of situations concerning the Department/Trust.
40. Carry out any other tasks requested relevant to their job role.
Clinical
41. To understand the clinical application for the medical equipment maintained.
42. Responsible for accurate repair, maintenance and calibration of support equipment, equipment providing patient medication and producing diagnostic information.
Management
43. To understand the clinical application for the medical equipment maintained.
44. To ensure patient safety, by making certain that all medical equipment is maintained according to manufacturer’s guidelines.
45. To agree with clinical staff and clinical departments the scheduling of medical equipment maintenance.
46. To prioritise, plan and organise own work schedules adjusting for emergency work.
47. To propose and implement changes in policy or work procedures/instructions within own area.
48. To be responsible for ordering spares and consumables within budget guidelines.
49. To keep the medical equipment database up to date.
50. To contribute and manage objectives as set within the Quality Management System.
Advisory
51. To liaise with clinical staff on the safe use of medical equipment.
52. To provide advice to non-technical clinical staff on the safe use of medical equipment. To assist in deciding whether medical equipment should be removed from clinical use.
Education & Training
53. To undertake formal manufacturer technical training courses to maintain and develop competence to repair existing medical equipment and to deal with new types of complex medical equipment.
54. To undertake training of less experience or new staff.
