Currently recruiting: Senior Systems Design Engineer
Reporting to the Manager for one of the Reactor Island systems groups, the Senior Engineer is responsible for design development of the Reactor Island Systems.
The role involves developing fluid system design concepts through gated design reviews, providing technical guidance and supervision to a small team of engineers. This includes ensuring the validity of the technical solutions developed under their direction, the delivery of a robust design and safety justification, supported by detailed performance and underpinning assessment; ensuring outputs comply with environment, safety, security and safeguards (E3S) objectives; and resolving emergent issues.
The candidate will be an experienced professional engineer in the field of nuclear fluid system / process system design with a strong proven record of delivering complex design programmes.
The role will require engagement and collaboration with a range of stakeholders, both internal and external, to ensure the scope is progressed in accordance with all applicable requirements at all business levels.
Key Selection Criteria:
Nuclear industry domain knowledge including:
1. Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) design, plant and behaviour.
2. Reactor plant operations, philosophy and procedures.
3. Environmental, Safety, Security and Safeguarding (E3S) regulations and principals (including application of As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) and Best Available Technique (BAT) principals).
Systems engineering essentials, including:
1. Systems engineering tools and techniques (e.g. functional modelling, Function Means Analysis (FMA), decision analysis), concept generation, assessment and selection.
2. Requirements development (including development of structured Requirements, Evidence, Definition and Verification (REDV) data and information) and management.
3. Functional interface development and management.
Nuclear reactor systems design and operational knowledge including Relevant Good Practice (RGP) in:
1. Nuclear steam raising systems including duty, safety and containment systems.
2. Waste systems including Liquid waste treatment system, Gaseous waste treatment systems, solid waste treatment, and storage and disposal practices.
System design development including:
1. Development and management of design requirements.
2. Process equipment sizing and specification.
3. Fluid flow calculations.
4. Generation of system operating principles.
5. Generation of design documentation (P&IDs, design reports, definition documents).
Technical leadership of design engineers:
1. Definition of an engineering project/programme of work.
2. Delivery of programme milestones in line with agreed plans and budgets.
3. Management of risks.
4. Monitoring of progress.
5. Technical writing and communication.
6. Technical checking and supervision.
Pay and benefits:
* Salary - £48,000 - £62,500
* A performance related bonus of up to 12.5%
* An attractive pension scheme with 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.

Each Rolls-Royce SMR power station will have the capacity to generate 470MW of low carbon energy, equivalent to more than 150 onshore wind turbines and enough to power a million homes.
