This is a highly visible role – building relationships with and working closely with senior managers and collaborating with their teams to identify the problems and challenges they face that could be resolved through innovation.
Innovation is about establishing a safe, collaborative space in which to explore higher-risk technologies and ways of working. Our innovation function works to foster and embed a culture of innovation in the business, while ensuring we stay focused on solving issues affecting the industry, customers and energy consumers as well as our priority challenges. Join us and you would be working on developing some of our exciting ongoing projects as well as guiding the business in figuring out where to invest next.
This role can be based from Wokingham or Warwick and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.
Key Accountabilities

* You will understand the key strategic challenges and priorities of innovation, the Directorate(s) and the wider organisation.
* Work with subject matter experts and industry innovators to develop, launch and facilitate the delivery of innovation projects.
* Work alongside the other Innovation Business Partners, and the wider Innovation team, to coordinate innovation activities that run across the business.
* Report on innovation activities to senior leadership for full visibility of projects.
About you
We’re forging the path, and we know we can’t do it alone. That’s why we need visionary minds like yours to join us on this transformative journey. In this case, we’re looking for someone who:
Essential: you must have demonstrable experience in the below:
* You must be a ‘self-starter’ – being a detective is an essential part of this role, developing a network of key individuals across the organisation as your go-to sounding board for ideas and finding out about the latest developments internally (and across the industry). You must have the ability to manage competing priorities and change in a fast-paced environment. Strong organisational and communication skills are an absolute must!
* You must have experience of identifying external partners for projects and managing them through sourcing, pitching, contracting and project startup processes through interfacing with Procurement teams.
* Stakeholder engagement, stakeholder management and relationship building are all essential skills – liaising with internal teams and external partners to set up, support and conclude projects.
* Project management – supporting the development and delivery of projects through their full life cycle.
* Strong analytical, problem solving and collaboration skills.
* Experience of working within a regulated environment with a clear understanding of governance and reporting requirements during project stages.
Desirable:
* Understanding of the GB Energy system.
* Knowledge of the use and application of digital and AI solutions.
* Experience of managing Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) innovation projects through their life cycle from idea, through pitch development and contracting to ongoing management and close down.
* Knowledge of the Strategic Innovation Fund and experience in sourcing ideas and partners for projects.

About us
National Energy System Operator (NESO) has a key role to play in tackling climate change by transitioning GB’s electricity system to net zero. We already operate the fastest decarbonising electricity system in the world, with an ambition for zero carbon power operation by 2030 when there is sufficient renewable generation. We are also providing advice to the Government on achieving a decarbonised power system by 2030.
So, join the energy transformation and help shape the future.
Your energy, our future, together.
About the National Energy System Operator (NESO)
In Autumn of 2024, the ESO transitioned to National Energy System Operator, or NESO for short. Previously denoted as the Future System Operator (or FSO), the new National Energy System Operator is the independent body responsible for planning Great Britain’s electricity and gas networks and operating the electricity system.
The ESO, including all of its existing roles, are now at the heart of the new National Energy System Operator. As NESO, we will build on our existing roles, capabilities, and ways of working significantly to create an organisation the energy system and its users’ need. Our new capabilities will enable us to look across vectors, including electricity, natural gas and hydrogen, and crucially consider the trade-offs between them.
The organisation is set up as a public corporation with its own Board of independent directors, with complete operational independence from government, the regulator and any and all commercial interest. As was the ESO, NESO will be licenced and regulated by Ofgem through price control agreements and obligated to identify optimal solutions to system operations and planning in the most sustainable, affordable and secure way for all.
The time to deliver is now. As part of our team, you won’t just be touching the lives of almost everyone in Great Britain – you’ll be shaping the way we use and consume energy for generations to come.
