About the job As part of the engineering support design team, the Cable Design Engineer will evaluate and develop cable system design and policies in line with client requirements and applicable national and international electro-technical standards and procedures, to ensure technical compliance is achieved. He / She will also provide ongoing technical and commercial support to the estimating, procurement and field-based operational teams, regarding approved methods of installation and installation specifications for all cable related matters including cable pulling, cable containment, backfills practises and cable structural supports. Responsibilities: Responsible for preparing cable system designs to applicable specifications and tender documentation, coordination with cable and accessories manufacturers, and providing technical support. To identify and design fully compliant cable system solutions to meet customer requirements, by being conversant with all electro-technical aspects of cables, accessories and installations procedures. To prepare and deliver project-based cable system Design Packs containing all relevant information and documentation for both design and construction phases. To liaise with cable & accessory suppliers and manufacturers to obtain the most cost-effective supply price and to so advise the estimating team. To liaise with suppliers and clients to ensure that the latest technical information is held, and to have knowledge of future developments. To maintain information on the customer approvals status and type registration status of all cables and accessories. To assimilate, review and prepare system information for type registration when necessary. To maintain an electro-technical dialogue with customers, manufacturers, suppliers, colleagues. To attend such technical symposia or conferences that may be relevant. Undertake cable rating, induced voltage, cable force and cable pulling calculations. Undertake cable crossing modelling, with appropriate software To provide regular reports on the status of the designs being undertaken and where necessary, to recommend improved methods of working. To work with external contractors and consultants when required. Qualifications and Requirements: A sound understanding of HV and EHV cable construction, design, installation, and test and commissioning is required, together with a comprehensive knowledge of power system engineering, and a good knowledge of current power industry based electrical engineering standards and working practices. Accuracy, literacy, and numeracy abilities. Candidate will be educated to graduate level. Electrical Power Engineering background. Microsoft Office including Word, Excel. Full UK Driving licence. Desirable: Competency with Microsoft Office software, AutoCAD and working knowledge with other specialised calculating and simulation software (Sketchup, Mathcad, MS Project). Working knowledge of cable rating modelling software, such as CYMCAP, ELEK, Cableizer, or other similar cable modelling software Working knowledge of AutoCAD and other specialised calculating and simulation software (Sketchup, Mathcad, MS Project, P6).
