We’re looking for a number of exceptional Senior Scientist - UK Applied Science to help us make a difference to our planet.
As our Senior Scientist- UK Applied Science, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Your world of expertise
We are looking to recruit around a dozen scientists who show real potential to be exceptional team members and who are passionate about the transformation of their expertise into products & services that benefit our customers. These scientists will be joining teams within the UK Applied Science each of which work with a range of customers.
The work we undertake is diverse, and depending on your skills you could be involved in:
* Understanding UK Climate Projections and using them to support decision-making
* Working across timescales to understand how weather predictions and climate projections can be translated into risk to ultimately support our customers’ medium to long-term planning
* Developing information that directly supports decision making within climate-sensitive sectors, including urban, agriculture, energy and transport.
* Prototyping and delivering scalable climate services that meet our customers’ needs for climate information
The underlying skills required are outlined in the essential criteria below, however support and training will be given based on each successful candidate’s individual experience and the skills required for the respective projects.
* Leading the development and application of suitable techniques for analysing and quantifying the impacts and associated risks of weather and/or climate upon the customer’s interests.
* Working with the wider Met Office team and partners across government to understand current and future Met Office capabilities; developing and applying those capabilities to address identified customer/stakeholder requirements.
* Leading the production of project reports for customers/stakeholders and the publication of scientific papers based on the project outputs (as applicable).
* Representing the Met Office at national and/or international customer/stakeholder meetings, workshops, scientific conferences, seminars etc. where the application of Met Office science (both weather and climate) need to be presented and discussed.
* Developing the scientific and technical capability of other members of the team and their understanding of customer/stakeholder requirements

As our Senior Scientist, your total reward package will be up to £57,639 annually, which includes:
* An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%
* Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
Essential Criteria, skills and experience:
* A high level of learned and working knowledge in weather and/or climate science or other physical science/environmental/mathematical subjects, gained through worked experience or academic qualification, with a strong track record of working on weather or climate science or its impacts on human and/or natural systems.
* Excellent programming skills and experience, e.g. Python, Unix and willingness to support others in developing their technical skills. Experience of applying and promoting recognised approaches to software quality assurance.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific and/or technical information clearly and effectively to a range of audiences, in the most appropriate format.
* Strong interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability to listen actively, discuss and understand diverse user/customer/stakeholder needs, to propose and tailor appropriate and innovative solutions to address those needs
* Strong organisational skills with demonstrated ability to lead the delivery of complex research projects or customer outputs, including leading the work of others
* Demonstrated clear understanding of the analytical application of science to the development and delivery of user-relevant outputs, and/or to gaining new user-relevant scientific insight

Our typical recruitment process
1. Application
Apply through our careers website. Each application will be assessed against the essential criteria detailed in the job advert. We recommend that you use the CARL or STAR method to answer the key questions. Evidence your answers and reference our values to bring your application to life.
2. Screening
The sift panel will assess all applications against our essential criteria. Our screening process usually takes one to two weeks following the closing date of the advert. After which, we'll be in touch to let you know whether your application has progressed to the next stage.
3. Interview
Most recruitment processes will include a single-stage interview, some of which are virtual interviews and some may be in-person. Our interviews tend to blend competency questions, which focus on the essential criteria, with values-based questions.
4. Assessment
Some roles may require you to attend an assessment day. Any job-specific assessments will be outlined in the job advert and more details will be provided at the interview stage.
5. Offer
If you are successful following the interview, the hiring manager will contact you to offer the role. The Resourcing Team will then follow up with an offer letter and start your onboarding.
6. Onboarding
Before we can confirm a start date, we will first need to complete security clearance and reference checks. These usually take between eight to ten weeks to complete. We'll also discuss any workplace adjustments that you may need. So they are in place on your first day.
On your first day your new manager will introduce you to the team and you’ll start our online corporate induction. You’ll also be asked to update your details in our People Hub system including bank details ready for your first pay day.
For those living outside of the UK, there are some roles where we can sponsor Skilled Worker visas. However, you will still need to pass security clearance which requires you to have resided in the UK for 30 months in the last three years.
