This role is based within RIS Preventive Risking (PR) (Risk Intelligence Service) which is a business with the Customer Compliance Group of HMRC.
PR are office-based, and we do expect all our full-time staff to work on average 3 days per week in an HMRC office location (pro rata for part time or special working arrangement). Please note, this role is unsuitable for contractual homeworkers due to the nature and/or requirements of the role.
We have several specific functions: Indirect Tax Registrations, Direct Tax Registrations, VAT Repayment Fraud, ITSA Repayment Fraud, PAYE Fraud, Gift Aid Repayments, and Transactional Intelligence Co-ordination Unit.
Important candidate information
SC level security clearance is required - the successful candidate can apply for this when they join but appointment is conditional on obtaining this.
Candidates will need to meet the minimum UK residency period as determined by the level of security vetting being undertaken, which for SC is 5 years UK residency prior to your vetting application. If you do not have a minimum of 5 years consecutive residency in the UK, then your application will be rejected.
Successful applicants will be required to obtain SC clearance prior to their start date.

Job description
We analyse, profile and risk assess customer interactions with HMRC to identify and prevent fraudulent repayment claims. We undertake repayment credibility risking, operating both pre and post Registration and Repayment activities.
We work with key partners to develop tactical and strategic responses to criminal attacks on HMRC systems. We tackle the increasing threat to HMRC from cybercrime, providing a dedicated and professional upstream risking capability in response to HMRC’s Repayment Fraud Strategy, minimising attacks to online systems.

Key Responsibilities include:
* Work within the remit of HMRC’s Repayment Fraud Strategy to analyse and detect fraudulent activity to HMRC online systems from individuals and groups aiming to commit repayment fraud.
* Apply effective decision making in line with operational processes.
* Deal with high-risk registrations for Direct and Indirect Taxes, checking applications and if applicable, refusing or disrupting fraudulent registrations.
* Work closely and collaboratively with colleagues across all functions within RIS PR and wider HMRC.
* Take ownership of your own development, setting stretching goals in conjunction with your manager.
* Review intelligence referrals and provide feedback on any insight gained.
* Prioritise and progress allocated tasks, working collectively with others across Preventive Risking and wider HMRC.
* You will look for opportunities for smarter working, looking to be efficient in our work.
* Accurately recording of MIS in line with decision making.
* Collate and analyse a range of information with the use of various internal and external systems, in line with General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
