A family run company, Magnetic Shields Limited (MSL) is the industry leader in the design and manufacture of magnetically shielded products and rooms. Our brand new factory unit and fibre laser cutting machine with full stock automation more than doubles our production capacity and throughput. This period of expansion is a very exciting time for the company and we are looking to speak to applicants interested in joining our Research & Development team as a JUNIOR (GRADUATE) MECHATRONICS ENGINEER.
This position will involve working with physicists and engineers on the design, development, qualification, documentation and practical build of original equipment, as well as supporting the practical build of repeating products to meet customer expectation within tight timescales. These products range from modest 19” rack (and smaller) modules to room-sized installations.
The candidate, experienced in mechatronic engineering, will work closely with both the mechanical and electrical engineering design teams to capture and integrate the interfaces between the two disciplines. Activities will include the design and threading of cable looms from the small scale such as in 19” equipment racks to large complex structures such as magnetically-shielded rooms, critical design review of complex structures to ensure mutual electro-mechanical compatibility, compiling CAD models and design documentation of electrical assemblies to be included in the product assembly model, and the design and construction of test jigs and small prototypes to test out concepts for new products and product upgrades.
The role will be based in the R&D team, reporting directly to the R&D manager, but will involve a significant amount of liaising with the mechanical design team. The successful candidate will be one with excellent communication and inter-personal skills, and a strong team player.
Main Duties:
* Design, modelling and documentation of cable looms from rack size to room size
* Undertaking and running critical design review activities, specifically around electromechanical interfaces
* Design and construction of small prototypes and test units
* Prototype design qualification
* Supporting the R&D team in integration, qualification and product testing
Essential skills:
* A degree in engineering
* Some practical experience with electronic measurement and signal generation equipment
* Understanding of basic fault finding and demonstration of logical method
* Basic programming skills for equipment automation and electro-mechanical control
* Technical documentation skills with keen eye for detail
* Strong analytical, alongside good computer skills & data presentation
* Reliable, motivated with ability to demonstrate logical and reasoned approach to problem solving
* Good communication skills
* Able to work effectively both in a team and independently
Desirable Skills:
* Soldering, crimping and wiring experience
* Understanding of the generation and testing of DC & AC magnetic fields
* Experience of MCAD (preferably Inventor) and ECAD (preferably Altium) techniques
* Ability to read and understand engineering drawings
