Responsibilities To develop high standards of care and work with the Eye Clinic staff to ensure public/patient involvement in care standards and the Eye Clinic environment, by means of observation of patient areas and patient interviews. To encourage feedback from patients. To develop the health promotion function of the Eye Clinic with the Senior Sister. For example, targeted information and high quality display boards. To undertake specific clinical care dependant upon the sub- speciality. Service management To assist with the definition of nursing standards and maintain the provision of and effectiveness of those standards To ensure awareness of all issues relating to clinical governance including assessment of risks by nursing staff To assist with research, evaluation and audit of projects within the Eye Clinic To attend meetings and provide professional nursing input, acting as a spokesperson for the department in the absence of the Senior Sister. Education and Training To contribute to induction and orientation programmes for new staff ensuring that the needs of the Eye Clinic are met To share and transmit skills and knowledge to other colleagues To participate in in-service education and practice development as required To mentor student nurses on placement in the Eye Clinic To attend all required mandatory training studies and support others in the nursing team to do likewise To ensure that the maintenance, control and administration of drugs policy and health and safety legislation is adhered to within NMC and trust guidelines. Professional Responsibilities To meet and greet all incoming patients and their carers in a courteous and compassionate manner To assess patients as they arrive at clinic, including undertaking observations as necessary To work closely with medical colleagues to provide appropriate nursing expertise To ensure that appropriate written patient documentation is maintained throughout the Eye Clinic To ensure that patients departing from the Eye Clinic have all the relevant information and advice they need, including a plan of their future care To liaise with external agencies and individuals in relation to patient care as appropriate To maintain effective communication links, both formal and informal, with all staff who work within the Eye Clinic To develop specialist knowledge pertinent to the Eye Clinic team and sub-speciality in which the post holder works and as directed by the needs of the service. Personal Development To maintain own personal and professional growth, by reading journals, attending study days and learning from peers To demonstrate and practice research based care To contribute to the continuing development of the department To undertake training to perform advanced ophthalmic skills.
