East London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint suitable people to the role of Associate Hospital Managers (AHMs). AHMs are volunteers who work in accordance with the guidance outlined in the Mental Health Act 1983 (the Act) and review patients' compulsory detention and Community Treatment Orders under the Act testing evidence against statutory criteria.
Main duties of the job
AHM reviews take place either at face-to-face hearings where the patient's doctor, care coordinator, and nurse give evidence to a panel of three AHMs and answer questions from the patient and their legal representative - or on paper (remote reviews held on MS Teams). Having gathered all the evidence, the AHMs must decide whether to discharge the patient.
The Trust offers a comprehensive induction package to all new AHMs and various training opportunities throughout the year.
Because the Trust serves the London Boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Newham, Hackney (+ City of London) as well as Bedford Borough Council, Luton Borough Council, and Central Bedfordshire Council, flexibility and willingness to travel to both our London and Bedfordshire sites are key to the role. Commitment to the Trust vision and values is also essential.
About us
Our mission is to make a positive difference to people's lives by improving the quality of life for all we serve. Our values are: We Care, We Respect, We are Inclusive - so we are looking for people who live and breathe these qualities when supporting service users and carers, and in their relationships with colleagues in the Trust and our partner organisations.
Job responsibilities
Although AHMs work on a voluntary basis, they are entitled to claim reimbursement of their travel expenses and receive an honorarium. We would like to ensure that AHMs reflect the diverse community we serve. We are particularly keen to seek applications from people of black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities, and males in general. Applications are also encouraged from young people as these are currently under-represented. We will however accept applications from all sections of the community, and will appoint on merit. Applications are also strongly encouraged from people who are, or have been, service users and/or carers. Due to the nature of the role, we seek people who are/have been involved with mental health services outside ELFT.
