About the role
All Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) accredited neurosurgeons who may wish to avail themselves of this opportunity should apply. We would like to attract neurosurgeons to North Queensland and this presents an ideal opportunity to experience the professional and personal lifestyle in this beautiful part of Australia.
This is a staff specialist position where the majority of commitment is to the public hospital; however, additional private practice opportunities may be available.
The department is expanding its scope in terms of volume and subspecialisation to meet the needs of the North Queensland community.
The capabilities expected of the role are of a well-trained general neurosurgeon. Independent surgical practice in routine areas of elective, acute, and traumatic brain, spine, and peripheral nerve surgery is expected. Of most importance is the ability to work as part of a team and accept the advice and oversight of senior colleagues in a learning and development environment.
We undertake outreach outpatient clinics in Cairns and Mackay as well as provide outpatient and inpatient care through Townsville University Hospital. Air travel to outreach clinics is an expected part of this role.
The hospital is a well-equipped tertiary hospital with an intensive care unit, radiology department with interventional capability, PET scanner, radiation oncology, and the full range of Surgical and Medical specialty groups.
