Role Description
The Head of Training and Competence will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the Training & Competence (T&C) framework for our mortgage and protection network. This role ensures that all advisers, supervisors, and key staff meet the required regulatory and professional standards, maintaining competence in line with Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) guidelines. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting adviser development, ensuring compliance, and driving high performance across the network.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Develop and oversee a structured T&C framework to support the ongoing competence and professional development of mortgage and protection advisers.
2. Design and deliver training programs, workshops, and e-learning modules to enhance adviser knowledge and skills.
3. Ensure all training content aligns with FCA regulations, industry best practices, and business objectives.
4. Competency & Regulatory Compliance:
5. Ensure advisers and supervisors meet and maintain FCA competency standards, including the monitoring and assessment of Competent Adviser Status (CAS).
6. Oversee induction and training for new joiners, ensuring they meet regulatory and network requirements.
7. Conduct regular competency assessments, observations, and file checks to ensure adherence to regulatory obligations.
8. Keep up to date with FCA regulations and industry changes, ensuring training materials and policies remain compliant.
9. Performance Management & Supervision:
10. Implement robust supervision processes to ensure advisers operate to the highest professional and ethical standards.
11. Work closely with Regional Managers, Compliance teams, and Supervisors to support adviser development.
12. Identify skill gaps within the network and create targeted training interventions to address them.
13. Leadership & Stakeholder Engagement:
14. Lead and manage the L&D and Supervision team, ensuring a culture of continuous learning and professional excellence.
15. Work collaboratively with Compliance, Sales, and Operations teams to align training initiatives with business goals.
16. Act as the key point of contact for FCA training and competence-related queries.
17. Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of training and competency programs.
18. Provide regular reports to senior management on adviser performance, competence levels, and training outcomes.
19. Continuously review and improve training programs based on feedback, regulatory updates, and business needs.
Skills & Experience Required:
1. Extensive experience in Training & Competence within a mortgage and protection network or financial services environment.
2. Strong knowledge of FCA regulations, including SM&CR, T&C rules, and competency requirements for advisers.
3. Proven track record in designing and delivering training programs for mortgage and protection professionals.
4. Excellent leadership, coaching, and people development skills.
5. Strong stakeholder management abilities, with experience working alongside Compliance, Sales, and Operations teams.
6. CeMAP (or equivalent) qualification required; CeRER an advantage.
