At Babcock we’re working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Radiological Environmental Safety Advisor at our Rosyth site.
The role
As a Radiological Environmental Safety Advisor, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. Working with a variety of stakeholders, such as internal nuclear related teams and external regulators or our customer, the MOD, you will be part of the team responsible for developing and implementing radiological environmental safety across current and future nuclear activities.
Day-to-day, you’ll ensure compliance in relation to radiological environmental safety, including out of scope solid waste, liquid effluent and gaseous discharges. You will also:
1. Work closely with colleagues to develop and implement policies and procedures within nuclear-related projects to ensure compliance with permits granted under EASR18, and contribute to aspects of IRR17, LC32, LC33, LC34, EIDAR 1999, and MOD requirements.
2. Complete assessments of operating history for nuclear submarines, including evaluating plant design characteristics, identifying potentially contaminative operations, reviewing incident reports, refit/lay-up records, previous radiological studies, and identifying potentially radiologically impacted areas to inform the radiological clearance approach.
3. Provide specialist advice to nuclear-related projects at Rosyth on the radiological clearance process, determining and justifying disposal routes for out-of-scope waste under EASR18, and ensuring specific requirements are included within each project's scope, including advice on specific waste items from Rosyth operations.
4. Offer ad hoc advice and guidance to nuclear-related projects at Rosyth on regulatory compliance and best practices in radiological environmental safety.
This role is full time, 36 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements.
Essential experience of the Radiological Environmental Safety Advisor
1. Able to demonstrate an applied understanding of environmental safety requirements ideally within radiological and/or nuclear industries; however, other areas of environmental safety will be considered.
2. An understanding of best practice for radioactive waste management in the UK Nuclear Industry would be beneficial.
3. Experienced in the determination and application of environmental safety requirements, principles, and the presentation of suitably underpinned and justifiable supporting arguments.
