University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust
Applications are invited for innovative, dedicated colleagues to expand our dynamic group of 12 luminal consultant gastroenterologists at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. We are expanding with five new consultant posts available to support the service.
A particular interest in the following would be welcomed:
1. Upper Gastrointestinal disease (including therapeutic endoscopy)
2. Inflammatory Bowel Disease
Clinical responsibility includes outpatient and endoscopy lists as well as supporting inpatient care. Successful candidates will join the GI bleed rota. They will be encouraged and supported to further develop their clinical and research skills and will also be expected to be involved in Undergraduate and Postgraduate education and research, with extra PA allocations accordingly.
Main Duties of the Job
The post holders will be responsible, together with other members of the department, for the provision of a high-quality secondary and/or tertiary gastroenterology service to complement the existing sub-specialisation within the department. The final job plan would be agreed on appointment; however, the successful candidate would be expected to undertake a mix of general gastroenterology, endoscopy, GI Bleed on call, and ward cover. Development of a sub-speciality interest is encouraged; a particular interest in upper gastrointestinal disease (including therapeutic endoscopy), advanced endoscopy/bowel cancer screening, intestinal failure, or inflammatory bowel disease would be welcomed. Depending on the needs of the department, the job plan could have elements of flexible working or annualised sessions.
The opportunities for teaching are excellent with a regular throughput of medical students from the University of Birmingham (located adjacent to the hospital) and Aston Medical School, junior doctors, and specialist registrars. The post holder will be expected to participate in postgraduate and undergraduate medical teaching, to participate in the training and development of all members of the multidisciplinary team, and to participate and supervise the training of Foundation Years (FY), Internal Medicine Trainees (IMT), & Specialist (ST) Trainees and nurse endoscopists.
Opportunities for research are extensive, including leading edge international, national, and regional studies in gastroenterology, intestinal failure/nutrition, IBD, hepatology, and endoscopy. There is a nationally funded NIHR Biomedical Research Centre in Gastroenterology and Liver Disease based at UHB as well as an active Clinical Research Facility. Current consultants have several university roles including research and academia. Pursuit of a GI research interest will be strongly encouraged and supported, and the post holder will be expected to develop research/special interests within the resources available, as agreed with the Clinical Service Leads.
