The Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy is looking for an additional member of staff to join our cleaning team. The role covers cleaning duties in communal areas and facilities including toilets. No formal qualifications are required although the experience of laboratory and/or office cleaning, would be beneficial, however training will be provided where necessary. As the role requires the use of cleaning products, the ability to follow written safety instructions is essential. A willingness to be flexible in approach and reliability are essential. We are a welcoming and friendly Department, located on the West Cambridge site with access to public transport links. Our building is a new built with high standard accommodation and with lift access to each floor. We hold social events and have free passes for friends and family to the University Botanic Garden. The role is permanent. We are able to offer up to 20h per week. We are happy to discuss flexibility on working times but we are expecting the post holder to be onsite 5 days per week. Main Duties Clean and prepare laboratories, study areas, libraries, meeting rooms, lecture theatres, kitchens and common areas to meet agreed standards. Clean staircases and outdoor areas as designated within the Department, and clean toilet areas daily to maintain agreed standards of cleanliness. Empty all bins and dispose of waste in accordance with type Vacuum all carpeted areas in accordance with Departmental rotas. Mop areas of restricted size or mechanical floor cleaner in large areas to achieve agreed standards of cleanliness, buff floors after cleaning. Clean toilets and all fixtures and fittings, mirrors, sweep floors, replace toilet rolls and hand towels Maintain surfaces such as glass panels in doors, sight panels, metal push plates on doors, banisters and handrails, and all other metal surfaces. Damp wipe tables and furniture, damp dust/wipe other surfaces e.g. skirting boards, pictures, notices, etc. as required. Spot clean as required, and report any equipment and maintenance issues to duty manager/supervisor/line manager as appropriate Follow Health & Safety regulations appropriate to the work being carried out, in particular awareness of manual handling requirements. Be aware of and understand the Risk Assessments for individual tasks undertaken. Be aware of and understand the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) guidelines when using cleaning fluids. Inform the supervisor of any hazards Be aware of the impact of the tasks on other users of the building(s) i.e. use warning signs when the floor is wet etc., be aware of the Fire Regulations in particular with respect to Fire Doors and designated escape routes Respond to general cleaning tasks assigned by the supervisor. Attend regular meetings with the supervisor/line manager to discuss rota changes, health and safety issues, etc.; cover for other team members in their absence. Inform the supervisor/line manager of low stocks of consumable cleaning materials.
