What you'll be doing We are on a mission to help people holiday better and more often providing them with peace of mind and brilliant value for money every time. We are seeking a dynamic and creative Data Journalist to use data to create useful and inspiring content for our customers and press team, about consumer trends, booking patterns and pricing insights. Example topics we might want to explore: The shocking generational holiday trends that will blow your mind - how 18-30s are swapping wild parties for zen retreats leaving party hotspots for empty nesters You won’t believe the holiday destinations that will cost you LESS next year than THIS: top deflation destinations for 2025 Why April is the new August for family getaways: how savvy parents are avoiding fines and saving big by holidaying in the Easter rather than summer holidays The luggage hack that could save you thousands – how much some families save in a lifetime of holidays from sharing a suitcase instead of taking one each The surprising new Nana trend taking family holidays by storm: (how more grandparents are holidaying with their grown-up kids than ever before) This genius tool finds your perfect holiday — and saves you money like never before: best value holidays based on your personal filters The holiday hack everyone is raving about: how to get an 8-night holiday for less than a 7-night holiday Key Responsibilities: You will be a central point person in our editorial forum: proactively identifying sales, consumer and pricing trends that might be interesting content themes for interactives, blogs, PR customer comms, social reactively researching hypothesis and creative ideas from team to see whether our sales data supports the story You will understand our product offering inside-out, and understand how it compares and contrasts to our competitor set so we can identify and promote our strongest competitive product / offers You will examine and report on published data to identify new stories or provide context, analysis and news lines on the biggest stories of the day Work independently or alongside designers and developers to create compelling visualisations and interactives Negotiate with public officials, businesses and academics for data and open records and gather information via Freedom of Information requests for our consumer champion strand of work e.g. https://www.onthebeach.co.uk/safeguarding-consumer-choice-in-the-travel-sector Write copy in the On the Beach style for emails, blogs, site and social to support your data stories About you You have strong analytical skills with experience in structuring, analysing and interpreting data to track performance and draw insights, with strong attention to detail You are curious and news hungry, able to make links between topical content and our holiday offering You have experience working with customer / omni channel platforms including GA4 Good knowledge of Microsoft Excel and PowerBi or other data management tools You have excellent communication and stakeholder management skills Relevant first degree, or equivalent qualification Programming languages, such as Python or R A proven track record of telling stories with data in a news organisation, charity or brand Data analysis and visualisation skills A sharp news sense Demonstrates a flexible attitude to the working environment and ability to work as part of a team. Skills you will bring to the beach Passion, drive, curiosity, commercial acumen and a can-do approach The ability to visualise complex ideas in a clear, accurate and creative way. A good understanding of statistics and statistical analysis. A good understanding of how to visualise data, using tools like Flourish, Datawrapper, QGIS or d3. Proficiency at writing detailed and accessible articles presenting data analysis. Strong journalistic judgment and editorial values. Understanding of Excel and Google Sheets is essential. A knowledge of programming languages for data analysis, such as R, Python or SQL is preferred. Knowledge of web development programming languages like HTML/CSS and JavaScript is an advantage. Experience working with customer / omni channel platforms including GA4 What to expect from our interview process We will have a multi-stage interview process to ensure all important questions get answered, both for us and for you. The starting point is a call with our Talent Team, followed by a call with the Hiring Manager.
