This role will involve operating heavy machinery, interpreting technical drawings, and working with various materials to ensure the accurate shaping and assembly of components for shipbuilding projects. What You'll Be Doing: Preparation and Shaping: Prepare steel or metal plates and sections for use in the production of structural steelwork for shipbuilding. Use cranes and hoists to move and assemble plates. Operate heavy-duty guillotines to cut metal plates. Use oxypropane flame cutters to create curves and complex shapes from metal plates. Employ rollers and presses to curve and bend plates into required shapes. Machinery Operation: Operate plate cutting machines and edge preparation machines. Use roll bending machines and presses to form and shape metal plates and sections. Operate CNC (computer-controlled) and hand-controlled machines for accurate cutting, shaping, and drilling. Tacking welded fabricated parts together. Reading and Interpreting Drawings: Read and interpret engineering drawings to ensure all dimensions, shapes, and cuts are accurate. Measure and mark out plates and sections for cutting, shaping, and drilling. Assembly and Welding: Cut slots in metal and drill or punch holes as per design specifications. Assist in the assembly of parts, ensuring that all fabricated components are properly positioned and secured.Key Responsibilities: Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints. Operate various cutting, bending, and welding machinery to produce metal components. Measure and mark out metal sections for cutting, shaping, and drilling. Safely use heavy machinery, including cranes and hoists, in a busy production environment. Work collaboratively with the team and independently when required, ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently and safely. Maintain high safety standards, adhering to all health and safety protocols during operations.Required Experience and Skills: Qualifications: Trade qualification in a relevant trade (Plating, Welding, or similar). Skills and Experience: Practical hand skills for using tools and equipment. Experience operating computer-controlled machinery (CNC machines). Ability to interpret technical drawings accurately. Strong concentration skills for working with machinery safely and accurately. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
