Main duties of the job
The Head of Nursing will work as part of the Directorate's triumvirate management structure alongside the Clinical Directors and General Manager to deliver our wide-ranging strategic, quality and transformational objectives.
You will need to have experience of leading nursing and clinical services as well as a proven track record of putting safety, quality and patient experience at the heart of all you do.
The role also supports on the delivery of partnership working across other clinical groups to ensure effective pathways and processes are in place to support patients and staff across the Trust.

The Haematology Directorate has a number of services of national and international reputation. The portfolio covers a number of high-profile specialties including Clinical Haematology, Haemostasis & Thrombosis, Blood Transfusion, Cellular Pathology, Chaplaincy & Spirituality and Oncology & Haematology Clinical Research Team.
The directorate employs over 500 WTE staff made up of diverse range of professions including Medical Staff, Nurses, Biomedical Scientists, Psychologists, Chaplains and Admin and Clerical staff.

Job description Job responsibilities
Leadership & Performance Management
In partnership with the Clinical Director and General Manager, provide leadership to all Directorate staff, ensuring clear communication of Trust and Directorate values, vision, priorities and expectations to ensure the engagement of teams to deliver services of the highest quality.
* In partnership with the Clinical Director provide professional and clinical leadership to Directorate staff.
* To contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of the Directorate Service Delivery Plan.
* In partnership with the Clinical Director and General Manager, develop and deliver the strategy and performance management of clinical services, holding service operational management teams to account for delivery of their service objectives and performance through regular performance review meetings.
* Joint responsibility with the General Manager to manage the highly complex nature of the business area and ensuring that the appropriate strategic plans are delivered within the complex operating framework.
* Joint responsibility with the General Manager for the development and delivery of capacity plans to ensure that the Trust achieves 18 weeks and other waiting time reduction targets.
* Responsibility for nursing specific productivity targets (e.g. Releasing Time to Care).
* To hold Lead Clinicians, Senior Nurses and other health professionals to account for delivery of their objectives through regular performance review meetings.
* Will ensure sufficient data availability within the Directorate to monitor and track performance and to satisfy reporting requirements related to the quality of nursing care and Directorate performance.
* Produce performance reports and briefings to monitor Directorate activities and to support decision making.
* Provide the leadership and experience to manage and deliver on the complex and changing workload, which will include the need to identify and resolve conflicting priorities within tight timescales.
* Provide appropriate input and challenge to clinical and business plans where necessary.
* Exercising delegated authority on behalf of the Clinical Director, the post holder will provide leadership to resolve day-to-day management issues within the Directorate.
* To formally deputise for the Clinical Director as required.

Qualifications Essential
* Registered Nurse on the NMC register
* Relevant Masters/MBA qualification or equivalent experience.
Experience Essential
* Demonstrate a successful track record of delivering effective nursing services as a senior nurse manager responsible for staff management, financial management and change management.
* Experience of managing a large, complex professional workforce and associated budgets.
* Experience of working and delivering Trust-wide professional nursing objectives.
* Evidence of delivering operational performance across a range of services.
* Experience of quality and risk management, to include experience in analysing and resolving complex complaints and incidents.
* A strong track record of managing complexity and risk whilst maintaining high standards of nursing care.
Skills Essential
* Able to articulate a clear vision/plan for nursing which will enable the Directorate to meet all of its objectives.
* Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team to solve problems and deliver change.
* A comprehensive understanding of the changing NHS environment and the challenges it faces and the role and contribution nurses can make.
* Ability to be intellectually flexible and to look beyond existing structures, ways of working, boundaries and organisations to produce more effective and innovative service delivery and partnerships.
* A commitment to improving patient services through an ability to sustain a clear performance focus on achieving demanding goals.
