Here at Lifeways in Southampton, we are looking for Support Workers to join our fantastic team. Ideally, you will have previous experience in Care/Support Work; however, if you are new to the role and have a passion for helping others to lead their most independent lives, then Lifeways can offer you excellent training and ongoing support to enable you to enjoy a rewarding career with us.
At this service, we have 11 service users, a range of male and female, ranging from 26-56 years old. All our service users have a primary diagnosis of a mental health condition, but some have secondary diagnoses as well. We have service users with paranoid schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, emotionally unstable personality disorder, bipolar disorder, substance and alcohol misuse, and autism.
Support ranges from supervising medication, support in living skills, making and attending appointments, support into the community, shopping, life skills, setting up and paying bills, attending local activities like college, arts and craft groups, and volunteering. A typical day for a recovery worker will include handling medications, on and off-site support, recovery planning, health and safety checks, compliance with local authority, and completing paperwork to high standards.
Staff who would work well here need to be resilient and adaptable, as one day is never the same as the other. They should be active listeners, approachable and friendly, have good boundaries, and work as a team in a consistent approach, as our service users will pick up on this straight away. They should also be able to manage stressful situations and be willing to support people who may be under the influence of drugs.
