An opportunity has arisen for a full-time Consultant General ENT Surgeon with a sub-specialist interest in Otology to join the Somerset ENT Service with the host for this post being Somerset NHS Foundation Trust at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. The on-call commitment is a 1 in 6.5 rota covering Taunton. The post will attract 10 PAs.
The post offers an exciting opportunity to join friendly, enthusiastic and forward-thinking ENT professionals who are supported by high-quality colleagues with a full allied spectrum of specialties. The post-holder will be encouraged to develop a special interest in conjunction with the existing Consultants.
The appointee would join the Somerset ENT team in delivering a modern, high-quality ENT service which is responsive to patients, and through an integrated service at the primary care level will improve health outcomes.
You must be registered with the GMC on the Specialist Register (or within 6 months of gaining entry onto), willing to participate as part of the on-call rota and be involved in Teaching and Clinical Governance provision.
If you share this vision and are able to work collaboratively, this is an ideal opportunity to be at the forefront of change.
Interviews will be held on 16th November 2022.
The job plan will include theatre sessions, outpatient clinics to include routine, urgent and 2-week wait referrals, SPA, and clinical administration. The post is expected to develop during the appointment, and the appointee will be actively involved in this development process. The job plan will then be reviewed annually in accordance with the Trust policy on Consultant Job Planning. As the integrated Somerset ENT service develops, there may also be sessions for the successful applicant at Yeovil depending on expertise/special interests/availability.
All Consultants are allocated 1.5 SPAs of core activity, and any other roles e.g. Audit lead, Cancer Lead, Clinical Lead, Educational Supervisor, Research Activity will be allocated as extra SPA time as appropriate.
The ENT department will operate according to a five-week rolling timetable.
Weekends on call are covered on a 1 in 7 rolling rota and weekdays/nights are covered on a 1 in 6 rolling rota. There is a single layer of junior ENT cover (F2 or SpR) out of hours below the consultant until 9pm, and then the hospital at night team reports directly to the ENT consultant on call between 9pm and 8am. The on-call ENT consultant is non-resident.
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is the first NHS trust on the English mainland to provide community, mental health and acute hospital services. We work with health and social care partners in Somerset to ensure that we deliver outstanding services that meet the needs of our population.
We are working with Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (YDH) to bring our two trusts together to create a new, single organisation which will be responsible for running Yeovil Hospital and Musgrove Park Hospital, community hospitals and services, mental health services and a quarter of GP practices in Somerset. By joining together, we will be able to provide better mental and physical health services for the population we serve, helping people to enjoy healthier lives with improved access to the specialist care and treatment they need, when they need it.
